Joining Arup

Arup’s purpose, shared values and collaborative approach have set us apart for 80 years, guiding how we shape a better world.

Our North Rail team brings together rail specialists from a wide range of disciplines to deliver safe, efficient and technically excellent infrastructure. As we continue to expand our presence in Scotland, we are looking for a Track Engineer to join our Permanent Way Design team and contribute to multidisciplinary rail projects across the UK.

The Opportunity

This is an excellent opportunity to become an integral part of our growing Scotland Permanent Way Design team. You will work on a diverse portfolio of rail renewals, enhancements and new-build projects, helping our clients achieve successful outcomes through technically sound and innovative design solutions.

You will be responsible for interpreting client briefs, determining track design requirements and applying your technical knowledge to develop safe, efficient and compliant solutions. Working independently and as part of multidisciplinary teams, you will contribute throughout the design lifecycle, from feasibility and option selection through to detailed design and delivery.

Your responsibilities will include:

· Producing permanent way designs for plain line track, switches and crossings, junction layouts, depots, sidings and associated railway infrastructure.

· Preparing feasibility studies, option selection reports, outline designs and detailed design packages.

· Developing track alignments, gauging assessments, track geometry calculations, technical specifications, drawings and reports.

· Reviewing and verifying design calculations, drawings and technical documentation to support consistently high-quality delivery.

· Undertaking design risk assessments and contributing to hazard identification and risk management processes.

· Coordinating with clients, project managers, construction teams and multidisciplinary design colleagues throughout project delivery.

You will have the opportunity to contribute to projects including Haymarket Depot, the Transpennine Route Upgrade west of Leeds, Northern Powerhouse Rail, Metro 2 Washington and Lisburn to Antrim.

At Arup, you belong to an extraordinary collective – in which we encourage individuality to thrive. Our strength comes from how we respect, share and connect our diverse experiences, perspectives and ideas. You will have the opportunity do socially useful work that has meaning – to Arup, to your career, to our members and to the clients and communities we serve.

Is this role right for you?

We are looking for people who:

· Have experience producing permanent way feasibility, scheme and detailed designs, including layouts, calculations, plain line renewals, infrastructure gauging and gauging reports.

· Can independently manage and deliver design work, applying sound technical judgement and knowledge of relevant railway standards to develop compliant engineering solutions.

· Have experience using relevant design tools such as Bentley Rail Track, OpenRail, ProjectWise, ClearRoute 2, Track-Ex, SD Calculator and Bentley MicroStation, including working within Common Data Environments.

· Understand relevant legislation, regulations and industry requirements, including CDM, CSM, Network Rail company standards, RSSB Railway Industry Standards and National Technical Specification Notices.

· Hold an appropriate engineering degree or equivalent qualification and are a member of, or working towards membership or professional registration with, a relevant institution such as the ICE or Rail Industry Association.
