Role Overview

Technical Lead Manager is described as the step before Engineering Manager, combining team ownership with substantial hands-on technical work.

The role leads an AI-native team building connector infrastructure for large-scale enterprise data pipelines.

The team operates at a scale of 100 billion records and petabytes of data per month across more than 2,000 customers and 150 source systems.

Team and AI Leadership

  • Lead a team that uses AI across design, review, testing, and production debugging workflows.
  • Teach engineers to work with specifications, evaluations, and guardrails alongside application code.
  • Set the team's hiring bar, hire engineers, support promotions, and provide difficult feedback effectively.
  • Architecture, framework scope, and decisions about where AI should be used are part of the role.

Platform and Connector Development

  • Build an AI connector framework that generates, tests, and repairs connectors when source systems change.
  • Lead scalable, reliable, and secure platform services and database connectors for mission-critical data pipelines.
  • Connect pipelines to warehouses including Snowflake, BigQuery, and Databricks and data lakes such as Apache Iceberg.
  • Address exactly-once delivery, multi-tenancy, and schema changes arriving during data flow.

Engineering Standards

  • Embed observability, reliability, security, and auditability into the team's systems by default.
  • Define evaluations and quality standards for production connectors and measure improvements in connector delivery speed.
  • Approximately 60% of the role remains technical and hands-on.

Experience Required

  • At least eight years of backend or distributed-systems experience is required.
  • At least one year of team leadership is required, including informal leadership experience.
  • Production experience with on-call, incidents, and SLAs is required.
  • Strong Java or another JVM language, with Kafka and Kubernetes in production, is required.
  • Experience with multi-tenant systems, high availability, or data at volume is required.
  • Production experience building LLM systems such as agents, evaluations, retrieval, or prompt systems is required.
  • The role requires clear communication of complex systems and effective delivery of difficult feedback.

Growth and Scope

The team starts with five engineers and is expected to grow as the engineering organization expands.

The role offers direct access to engineering leadership and potential progression toward Engineering Manager or Staff and Principal paths.
