Supervisor, Solid Waste Services

Qualifications and requirements

• Considerable experience related to the duties listed above, normally acquired through the completion of post-secondary education in Environmental Science, Business Administration, Economics, Logistics or related discipline and considerable experience in the solid waste industry with responsibility and knowledge for residential waste collection, site operations or another industry with responsibility for daily waste pickup/delivery/routing and/or waste site management with a fleet of vehicles and equipment. Candidates with an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
• Experience motivating, training, and supervising unionized staff in a customer service oriented, politically sensitive environment.
• Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple assignments in order to meet deadlines in a very demanding environment.
• Excellent communications skills with the ability to communicate with all levels of staff, stakeholders and the general public.
• Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and mapping systems such as ARC View, scale software such as Paradigm
• Excellent customer service skills with the ability to resolve customer concerns and issues.
• A team player with excellent interpersonal skills to be able to deal with sensitive issues.
• Knowledge of applicable waste management legislation and regulatory/safety compliance and the ability to research and stay up-to-date with new legislation.
• Must possess a valid G driver’s licence and have a good driving record. Successful candidates will be required to provide a current driver’s abstract prior to their start date to confirm their license is held in good standing and that it has not been suspended or revoked under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) or Criminal Code of Canada in the last 3 years. The City of Guelph will take into consideration the number of demerit points and/or nature of the infractions to determine if it meets our requirements.
• A DZ or higher license would be considered an asset.
• Transportation related safety courses would also be considered an asset.
