Role overview

Staff Software Engineer role focused on shared engineering capabilities that underpin Our Future Health’s data platforms.

The role combines hands-on software engineering with Staff-level technical leadership across large-scale data systems and reusable tooling.

Technology supports websites, UK clinics, secure analytics, research systems, and pipelines handling sensitive health and genetic data.

Essential duties and responsibilities

  • Guide technical decisions with the squad’s product manager and engineering manager.
  • Represent technology, architecture, and engineering in projects from ideation through implementation.
  • Act as a technical and architectural guide with the Head of Data Engineering and peer Staff and Lead Engineers.
  • Lead critical technical strategy and implementations for the business area.
  • Carry out high-impact hands-on engineering work and integrate partner and supplier systems.
  • Support colleagues through pairing, peer reviews, coaching, discussion, and other collaborative activities.
  • Participate in live operations support and possible out-of-hours on-call rotations.
  • Anticipate pipeline problems, diagnose incidents, and develop short- and long-term solutions.
  • Keep current with software engineering best practices and identify opportunities to apply them.

Technical skills and experience

  • Experience leading architectural design of systems.
  • Highly proficient in cloud engineering, preferably Azure, with AWS and GCP also relevant.
  • Experience processing large data volumes at scale with cloud-native technologies such as Kubernetes, Helm, and Docker.
  • Highly proficient with Infrastructure as Code, including Terraform and Ansible.
  • Highly proficient in Python; orchestration tools such as Dagster, Prefect, and Airflow are advantageous.
  • Experience with Spark, Databricks, data lakes, and lakehouses.
  • Knowledge of data modelling, relational databases such as PostgreSQL, and other data stores.
  • Proficiency in code review, TDD, CI/CD, pairing, Git, and GitHub.
  • Experience managing live software components, including observability, logging, debugging, and incident management.
  • Experience working with sensitive personal data.
  • Health data, FHIR, and health data models such as OMOP, PCORnet, i2b2, and CDISC are advantageous.

Competencies

  • Experience working with engineers, product, UX, and non-technical stakeholders in cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to communicate with stakeholders and audiences at different levels.
  • Understanding of operational, security, and legal factors in solution design and trade-off decisions.
  • Experience in small, growing organisations with ambiguity and valued flexibility.
  • Strong understanding of software quality principles and practices.
  • Experience mentoring and coaching less experienced engineers.
  • Comfort facilitating technical discussions, encouraging collaboration, and providing direction.

Compensation and benefits
