Staff Production Engineer

Role overview

What you will do

• Own a high-risk technical engagement involving areas such as data-store sharding, resource utilization, or distributed systems.
• Write, instrument, refactor, and rebuild production software to improve reliability and efficiency at scale.
• Collaborate with product and infrastructure teams and contribute shared platform capabilities when patterns recur.
• Improve incidents, recovery, severity, latency, and customer experience outcomes.
• Build trusted relationships with embedded teams and guide higher-velocity delivery with less toil.

Experience

• Own reliability work in large-scale distributed systems and write fixes when systems break.
• Work effectively as an engineer embedded in or closely partnering with product or feature teams.
• Build production-scale systems in Java, Go, Rust, C++, or a comparable systems language.
• Apply distributed systems concepts including sharding, replication, failure modes, and consistency tradeoffs.
• Navigate unfamiliar large codebases, identify root causes, and make improvements through influence without authority.

Technical knowledge

• Understand networking and traffic behavior at scale.
• Understand Linux internals including scheduling, memory, I/O, and the network stack.
• Apply distributed systems patterns such as consistent hashing, leader election, consensus, backpressure, and circuit breakers.
• Build observability through tracing, dashboards, alerting, and meaningful SLOs.
• Use Kubernetes at production scale and understand scheduler behavior.
• Profile JVM or systems processes and diagnose performance issues.
• Work deeply with AWS infrastructure and participate in serious production incident response.
