Staff Production Engineer

Role overview

What you will do

• Own a long-term engagement area involving high-risk domains such as sharding, core data stores, resource utilization, or distributed systems.
• Write, instrument, refactor, and rebuild production software to improve reliability, efficiency, and resilience.
• Partner closely with product and infrastructure teams to influence how software lands in production.
• Contribute shared platform capabilities when recurring patterns extend beyond the embedded engagement.
• Improve incidents, recovery speed, severity, latency, and customer experience metrics.
• Develop trusted relationships with embedded teams and guide them toward faster delivery with less toil.

Experience

• Experience owning reliability work in large-scale distributed systems.
• Experience embedded in or closely partnering with a product or feature team.
• Commercial production-scale experience with Java, Go, Rust, C++, or a comparable systems language.
• Practical experience with sharding, replication, failure modes, and consistency tradeoffs.
• Ability to debug unfamiliar large codebases and fix problems at their source.
• Demonstrated influence through technical judgment and trust without formal authority.

Technical knowledge

• Strong networking knowledge, including network stack behavior and traffic at scale.
• Linux internals knowledge covering process scheduling, memory, I/O, and the network stack.
• Knowledge of distributed systems patterns such as consistent hashing, leader election, consensus, backpressure, and circuit breakers.
• Experience with tracing, dashboards, alerting, causal analysis, and meaningful SLOs.
• Production-scale Kubernetes and AWS experience.
• Experience profiling JVM applications or systems-level processes.
• Experience participating in serious production on-call and incident response.

Desirable experience

• Enterprise SaaS production engineering experience is desirable.
• JVM garbage collection tuning and production thread profiling are desirable.
• Multi-region architecture or sharding and data-store migration experience is desirable.
• Production eBPF or kernel instrumentation experience is desirable.
