Position Overview
Lead science media relations and strategic communications for the American Heart Association’s cardiovascular and brain health research, publications, meetings, and clinical guidance.
The position can be home-based with a flexible location.
Core Responsibilities
- Implement multi-year strategic communication plans supporting scientific manuscripts, meeting abstracts, clinical care guidelines, scientific statements, and advisories.
- Develop resources that translate scientific information for media and public audiences.
- Secure earned media coverage and cultivate relationships with journalists.
- Support science leaders and research authors whose work appears in journals or scientific meetings.
- Review manuscripts accepted for publication and abstracts accepted for scientific meetings.
- Develop news releases, media pitches, and multimedia assets to promote scientific research and clinical guidance.
- Review and select abstracts for promotion and provide peer edits on colleagues’ news releases.
- Develop talking points and key messages for research authors and experts.
- Lead development of news kits for scientific meetings, including releases, quotes, interviews, FAQs, and infographics.
- Monitor traditional and social media for breaking news and evidence-based developments related to heart and brain health.
- Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to expand communications reach and mission impact.
- Supervise up to two team members and mentor and coach team members and collaborators.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications or equivalent experience.
- At least five years of writing and editing experience, including translating scientific research for the public and knowledge of AP Style.
- At least five years of experience managing press, promotional, or related content, building journalist relationships, and securing earned media coverage.
- At least five years of proficient computer experience, including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
- At least five years of project management experience, including managing multiple concurrent projects.
- At least five years of demonstrated ability to work under tight deadlines and competing priorities.
- Ability to travel up to 10%–15%.
Preferred Qualifications
- Eight years of relevant experience is preferred.
- At least three years of successful supervisory experience is preferred.
- Portfolio demonstrating successful multifaceted media strategies for scientific publications, journals, and meetings is preferred.
- Experience reviewing and translating scientific abstracts and manuscripts, pitching stories, managing media interviews, and preparing experts is preferred.

Compensation
- The posted salary range is $86,000 to $102,000, with pay commensurate with experience and possible geographic differentials.
- The employer may pay more or less than the posted range.
