Special Inspector

The Special Inspector is responsible for performing masonry special inspections to verify compliance with approved construction documents, project specifications, applicable building codes, and quality assurance requirements.

include inspection of masonry construction, reinforcement placement, mortar and grout operations, anchors, embedded components, and related structural elements while documenting compliance and identifying non-conforming conditions.

In addition to masonry inspections, the Special Inspector performs field and laboratory testing of concrete, soils, asphalt, masonry, and aggregate materials in accordance with ASTM, AASHTO, and project requirements.

include sample collection and receiving, curing and compressive strength testing, preparation of inspection and laboratory reports, maintenance of testing records, and support of laboratory quality control and accreditation requirements.

The Special Inspector works closely with contractors, engineers, project managers, clients, and laboratory personnel to ensure timely inspections, testing, reporting, and resolution of quality-related issues while supporting compliance with IAS, AASHTO, CCRL, NYC DOB, and other applicable regulatory standards.

• Perform masonry special inspections in accordance with approved construction documents, project specifications, NYC Building Code requirements, and applicable industry standards
• Verify masonry materials, reinforcement placement, grout installation, mortar operations, anchors, connectors, and embedded components
• Observe and document masonry construction activities to ensure compliance with approved plans and specifications
• Identify, document, and communicate deficiencies, non-conforming conditions, and corrective actions
• Coordinate with contractors, engineers, and project teams to resolve field issues
• Prepare daily inspection reports and required special inspection documentation
• Maintain inspection records in accordance with company procedures and regulatory requirements

• Perform field and laboratory testing of concrete, soils, asphalt, masonry, and aggregate materials
• Conduct concrete field testing including slump, air content, temperature, unit weight, and specimen preparation
• Receive, identify, log, cure, and maintain testing samples in accordance with applicable standards
• Perform compressive strength testing of concrete cylinders, grout prisms, masonry prisms, and related materials
• Maintain chain-of-custody documentation and testing records
• Ensure testing activities are performed in accordance with ASTM, AASHTO, project specifications, and laboratory quality procedures

• Support laboratory operations, equipment maintenance, and calibration verification activities
• Maintain compliance with laboratory quality management systems and accreditation requirements
• Assist with IAS, AASHTO, CCRL, NYC DOB, and other regulatory audits and inspections
• Maintain organized testing records, logs, and supporting documentation
• Follow laboratory safety procedures and company safety policies
• Report quality concerns, testing discrepancies, and non-conforming materials as required

• Prepare accurate, complete, and timely field and laboratory reports
• Review project plans, specifications, testing requirements, and inspection criteria prior to assignment
• Maintain project documentation and records in accordance with company standards
• Communicate inspection findings and testing results to project managers, clients, and project stakeholders
• Support project teams with compliance documentation and quality assurance requirements

• High School Diploma or GED required
• Associate Degree in Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Management, or a related field preferred

• Minimum three (3) years of experience performing special inspections and/or construction materials testing
• Experience performing masonry inspections in accordance with applicable building codes and project specifications
• Experience performing concrete field and laboratory testing
• Experience working in an IAS, AASHTO, or CCRL accredited laboratory
• Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, shop drawings, and technical documents

• ACI Concrete Laboratory Testing Technician – Grade I
• Additional ICC Special Inspector certifications are a plus

Salary: $35 - $40 per hour
