The engineer will tackle challenging systems problems with substantial autonomy and ownership.
The work involves database query planning, compilers, and distributed analytical data processing.
Work Arrangement
- The team works in the office five days a week.
- The company may be flexible for unavoidable conflicts, but this is not a hybrid role.
What You Will Do
- Work directly with Chalk's co-founders.
- Write C++, Python, and Rust.
- Design, implement, ship, and maintain components of the query planning and execution engine.
- Improve the platform in response to customer needs.
- Optimize arbitrary user Python code through dynamic and static analysis.
- Infer and orchestrate infrastructure from the structure of user code.
- Track metadata about data flow through platform systems.
What We Are Looking For
- At least 4 years of professional backend software engineering experience.
- Strong computer science fundamentals and comfort building and maintaining real systems.
- Ability to lead development of new components and own existing software.
- Ability to learn new concepts quickly.
- Ability to work autonomously and make pragmatic tradeoffs.
- Strong communication skills.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent.
Bonus Points
- Experience implementing data infrastructure.
- Experience with distributed systems, compilers, or query planners.
- Experience with Rust.
- Experience developing PaaS-like software.
Compensation
- The stated compensation range is $170,000-$280,000.
