About the role

Work on Camunda 8's event-sourced, distributed workflow engine that executes business-critical processes for thousands of customers.

Develop core backend capabilities involving event sourcing, ordering, concurrency, replay, APIs, and process automation.

Own well-scoped work end to end while learning from experienced engineers in a remote-first, asynchronous environment.

What you'll be doing

  • Build and evolve features in the event-sourced engine and C8 REST, gRPC, and MCP APIs.
  • Implement, test, and ship well-scoped work; contribute to solution designs and write design notes or ADRs.
  • Deliver features including process-instance suspension and resumption, AI-agent process control, and variable tracing.
  • Design and consume clean APIs with good contracts, developer ergonomics, and backward compatibility.
  • Optimize processing and data-access patterns across RocksDB, Elasticsearch/OpenSearch, and relational or PostgreSQL data stores.
  • Build observability into shipped software and participate in reviews, testing, support, and on-call.

Must haves

  • At least 2 years of professional backend engineering experience.
  • Working understanding of event-driven systems, event sourcing, consistency, ordering, and failure basics.
  • Good REST API design instincts, including clean contracts and backward compatibility awareness.
  • Ability to work independently, manage time in a remote asynchronous setting, communicate progress, raise blockers, and follow through.
  • Clear written communication and a strong product-oriented approach.

Nice to haves

  • Experience with workflow automation or process orchestration such as BPMN.
  • Comfort reasoning about Elasticsearch/OpenSearch and relational or PostgreSQL query patterns.
  • Familiarity with logging, metrics, and tracing.
  • Working JVM knowledge.

Compensation

  • Annual total target cash for the United Kingdom ranges from £75,300 to £123,800, depending on market, skills, experience, and location.
  • The annual total target cash includes base salary and a 100% variable target where applicable.
  • Equity may be offered through Camunda's Virtual Stock Option Plan.

Workplace and benefits

  • The role is fully remote and global, with flexible work arrangements and support for home offices or coworking spaces.
  • Benefits may include locally delivered healthcare, wellbeing support, retirement or pension plans, insurance, and professional learning funding.
