OpenAI's API Platform turns frontier research into reliable capabilities for developers.
The API Safety team designs APIs and systems that help developers share usage context, understand safety events, and apply safeguards based on application risk.
The team partners with API, Integrity, and Safety Research on safe deployment of frontier models.
About the Role
The role is for product-minded software engineers addressing emerging risks in model development and building solutions for real-world AI deployment.
Day-to-day work ranges from solving production challenges to designing product experiences and safeguards.
The role balances developer experience, latency, reliability, and risk.
Responsibilities
- Design and build dashboards and APIs for safety controls and customer-facing observability.
- Develop scalable systems that extend trusted safety capabilities to new use cases, customers, and deployment environments.
- Partner with Safety Research and Integrity to build safeguards that mitigate emerging risks.
- Own the availability, latency, and scalability of safeguards across high-volume API traffic.
- Own projects from technical design and implementation through launch and ongoing iteration.
- Raise the team's engineering standards.
Background
- Have at least seven years of professional experience, excluding internships, in backend, infrastructure, platform, or product engineering roles.
- Have designed, built, and operated production backend services, developer-facing APIs, or distributed systems.
- Have strong software engineering and systems fundamentals and experience leading technically complex projects.
- Be proficient in one or more general-purpose backend languages such as Python, Go, Rust, or TypeScript.
- Have experience with reliable, scalable systems and distributed architecture, concurrency, latency, observability, and operational tradeoffs.
- Bring product judgment and developer empathy for creating clear, intuitive APIs.
- Communicate clearly and collaborate with researchers, product managers, designers, infrastructure engineers, and customers.
- Experience with observability, abuse prevention, trust and safety, identity, security, privacy, compliance, or risk systems is a strong plus.
- Have an interest in helping frontier AI reach developers and businesses responsibly.
