About the Opportunity

The product is entering its next phase after strong initial traction, with work spanning AI platforms, peer-to-peer payments, DeFi integrations, plugins, and the end-to-end product experience.
The role works closely with the Chief Engineer and a small, focused team, with ownership closer to a founding engineer role than a traditional Staff engineering position.
What You Will Do
- Own significant PayBox areas from identifying the problem and defining the approach through building, shipping, and production iteration.
- Advance a recently launched product through its next phase of 0-to-1 development and growth.
- Build payment and peer-to-peer transfer experiences designed for AI interfaces.
- Build integrations across AI platforms, applications, and the wider PayBox ecosystem.
- Develop infrastructure and product experiences that bring new applications and integrations onto PayBox.
- Work with Product to turn ambitious ideas into simple, usable experiences.
- Improve onboarding and UX by removing friction that prevents users from successfully using PayBox.
- Make pragmatic first-principles decisions about difficult technical and product problems.
- Move across the product and technical stack according to the highest-impact problem.
- Use AI extensively while retaining independent technical reasoning, judgment, and accountability.
Must-Have Experience and Skills
- Exceptional technical reasoning and strong engineering fundamentals.
- High agency and responsibility for identifying and solving important problems.
- End-to-end experience building and shipping meaningful products, projects, or systems.
- Thoroughness and deep care for quality and overlooked details.
- Strong systems thinking and ability to make sensible architectural decisions.
- Product judgment that values the experience around the technology.
- Comfort with ambiguity and rapidly changing priorities.
- Ability to use AI aggressively without outsourcing independent reasoning or accountability.
- Deep motivation to own product outcomes and responsibility.
Nice-to-Have Experience
- Experience as a founding engineer or early engineer at a high-growth startup.
- Experience founding and building a company or product.
- Experience taking a product from idea through launch and subsequent iteration.
- Experience operating in small, highly autonomous engineering teams.
- Experience building AI-native products, agents, or developer tooling.
- Experience with payments, fintech, crypto, or DeFi.
- Experience with MCP or other emerging agent protocols is a bonus, not a prerequisite.
