About the role
Join Expense Engineering in Berlin or London to own systems supporting the full expense lifecycle for employees, approvers, and finance administrators.
Work across expense product areas and production AI systems handling receipts, conversational capture, missing information, and administrative automation.
Improve accuracy, latency, cost, and safety in products used with complex EMEA tax, VAT, per diem, mileage, and multi-entity requirements.
Expense product areas
- Build employee flows for transaction entry, drafts, receipts, trips, reimbursements, cards, and bank-linked spend.
- Support international spend features including line-itemization, per diem, mileage, VAT/GST, and tax receipts.
- Develop administration and control features covering policy, approvals, custom fields, HR fields, audit logs, and reporting.
- Work on money movement and close through statements, purchase cards, reimbursements, accounting postings, and inbound data.
AI systems and quality
- Improve receipt intelligence that extracts merchant, amount, date, tax, and line items from receipts and documents at high daily volume.
- Build conversational expense assistants and missing-information agents with streaming, retrieval, safe updates, provenance, and guardrails.
- Develop finance agents that approve, reject, flag, route, and explain spend without bypassing permissions or audit controls.
- Use evaluation harnesses, kill switches, deterministic policy logic, and careful handling of PII and payment-sensitive data.
What we're looking for
- At least 5 years of experience building production software; 8 or more years for Staff-level scope.
- Depth in at least one of Java and Spring Boot, modern TypeScript, or Python services, with willingness to cross boundaries.
- Experience with relational data modeling, APIs, and cloud platforms including AWS.
- Production experience shipping AI using LLM APIs, tool calling, retrieval-augmented generation, evaluation, or document and vision extraction.
- Comfort with financial or workflow-heavy domains and with production-quality practices such as tests, CI/CD, observability, and incident ownership.
- Experience with Kafka or similar messaging systems is a plus.
- Document OCR, VAT/GST or multi-currency, policy engines, agent frameworks, evaluation platforms, and mobile AI UX are nice to have.
Location and collaboration
- The role is based in Berlin or London, or requires willingness to relocate.
- The team collaborates across US, Israel, and India time zones.
