Role Overview

Customer.io is seeking experienced backend engineers focused on reliability, performance, and scalability.

The role designs, builds, and evolves systems that power automated customer communications at large scale.

About Customer.io

Customer.io serves more than 9,000 companies and supports billions of emails, push notifications, in-app messages, and SMS messages.

The platform uses real-time behavioral data to help teams send more relevant communications.

What We Value

  • Own problems end to end, move quickly, act like an owner, and thrive in ambiguity.
  • Think like a product user and connect engineering systems to customer value.
  • Apply rigor and creativity while questioning existing practices when forward motion requires it.

What You’ll Do

  • Design and build distributed systems in Go that support timely, relevant messaging at scale.
  • Collaborate across teams to debug issues and deliver reliable solutions.
  • Own work from architecture and schema design through testing, deployment, and monitoring.
  • Share progress publicly through short videos and thoughtful writing, and mentor other engineers.
  • Use AI agents to scope work, write prompts, make multi-file changes, and verify results.

What We’re Looking For

  • At least 7 years of experience building scalable distributed systems in Go or a similar statically typed language.
  • Comfort working in cloud-native environments such as AWS or GCP.
  • Familiarity with relational databases such as MySQL and an understanding of performance tradeoffs.
  • Experience with observability tooling and operating production systems.
  • A bias for action, ownership of technical decisions, and pride in engineering work.

Compensation

  • Starting salary is $150,000 to $200,000 USD or the equivalent in local currency, depending on experience and market rates.

Benefits

  • Benefits include family medical, dental, vision, mental health, and supplemental insurance coverage.
  • The package includes 16 weeks of paid parental leave, unlimited paid time off, remote-work and wellness stipends, and professional development funding.

Additional Benefits

  • Employees receive 25 holiday days per year, local public holidays, flexible working arrangements, and the option to work abroad for up to three months annually.
  • The company offers a paid sabbatical after five years and enhanced parental leave.

Hiring Process

  • The process includes an application, recruiter call, hiring manager interview, technical system design interview, take-home assignment, and assignment review call.
  • Final candidates complete a background check and employment verifications.
