Senior Software Engineer, Backend - Distributed Systems

About the role

What you will do

• Design, build, and maintain backend services for Camunda 8's orchestration platform.
• Lead medium-to-large engineering initiatives from business problem definition through solution design, planning, coordination, and delivery.
• Improve disaster recovery and resilience through online backup and restore, multi-region, and multi-tenant capabilities.
• Build developer and operator tooling for understanding, troubleshooting, and safely operating distributed systems.
• Improve CI, testing, and local development workflows with DevOps and Core Application teams.
• Participate in L3 support and on-call rotations to resolve complex production issues.

Must haves

• At least 7 years of professional software engineering experience focused on backend and/or distributed systems.
• Experience leading medium-to-large engineering initiatives of roughly three months or more.
• Experience building and maintaining highly concurrent, data-intensive software.
• Deep understanding of network and disk I/O, including throughput, latency, backpressure, batching, and failure modes.
• Ability to work autonomously and navigate ambiguity with minimal supervision.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills in a remote-first environment.

Nice to haves

• Experience building workflow automation or process orchestration software.
• Experience with Raft, Paxos, SWIM, or CRDT distributed-systems algorithms and protocols.
• Familiarity with logging, metrics, tracing, L3 support, and on-call operations.
• Deep knowledge of the Java Virtual Machine, its memory model, and concurrent workload performance.

Compensation

• Annual total target cash for the United Kingdom ranges from £90,300 to £148,500.
• Annual total target cash includes base salary plus a 100% variable target where applicable.
• Final offers depend on skills, experience, and location, and equity may be offered through the Virtual Stock Option Plan.
