About the Role

Work as a Senior Software Engineer on Camunda's Core/API and Process Automation team.

Evolve Camunda 8's event-sourced, distributed workflow engine that executes business-critical processes.

Help enable AI agents to integrate with and drive the workflow engine.

Workplace

  • The organization describes the role as fully remote and global.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Design, build, and evolve the event-sourced engine and Camunda 8 REST, gRPC, and MCP APIs.
  • Lead ambiguous technical problems through solution design, trade-off analysis, sequencing, and delivery.
  • Deliver engine features including process-instance suspension and resumption and AI-agent control of running processes.
  • Ship resiliency, schema evolution, observability, replay safety, and correct event-log migrations.
  • Optimize processing and data-access patterns across RocksDB, Elasticsearch/OpenSearch, and relational or PostgreSQL stores.
  • Review code, mentor engineers, lead incidents, own root-cause analyses, and feed systemic fixes into the platform.

What You Bring

  • At least 5 years of professional backend engineering experience with distributed and event-driven systems.
  • Deep knowledge of event sourcing and distributed execution, including consistency, ordering, replay, failure modes, idempotency, and recovery.
  • Strong API design and evolution experience, including backward compatibility, versioning, deprecation, and contract testing.
  • Experience diagnosing and fixing performance under production load through profiling, benchmarking, tail-latency, and backpressure analysis.
  • Ability to work autonomously on ambiguous problems, make pragmatic decisions, and provide technical leadership.
  • Strong technical writing, remote-first collaboration, product thinking, and communication skills.

Nice-to-Haves

  • Experience with workflow automation or process orchestration such as BPMN.
  • Awareness of consensus or replication protocols such as Raft or SWIM.
  • Deep query-pattern optimization experience with RocksDB, Elasticsearch/OpenSearch, and relational or PostgreSQL databases.
  • Solid JVM knowledge, including memory models, concurrency, and performance.

Compensation

  • Annual total target cash for the United Kingdom ranges from £90,300 to £148,500, with final offers based on skills, experience, and location.
  • The stated annual total target cash includes base salary and a 100% variable target where applicable.
  • Equity may be offered through a Virtual Stock Option Plan.

Benefits and Perks

  • Benefits include remote-work support, home-office and coworking support, flexible time off, team offsites, and connection budgets.
  • Benefits may include healthcare, mental wellbeing support, lifestyle spending, retirement or pension plans, insurance, and professional learning funding.

Hiring Process Notes

  • Camunda may use AI tools during application screening and interviews.
