Position Overview

The Senior Policy Analyst reports to the Director of Languages and Learning.

The role conducts research, analysis, policy development, coordination, and delivery of briefings and written materials concerning artificial intelligence and its implications for First Nations.

The position supports AFN national advocacy positions, interests, and strategies related to First Nations language and learning priorities.

Travel may be required from time to time.

Key Responsibilities

  • Gather and analyze statistical information, assess existing research, and prepare reports and briefings on AI and First Nations priorities.
  • Recommend AI-related policies through research and engagement with First Nations and AI stakeholders.
  • Develop recommendations concerning AI governance, data sovereignty, programs, processes, and procedures affecting First Nations.
  • Assist with AFN resolutions and policy papers related to AI.
  • Collaborate with sector staff to share information, recommend approaches, and discuss challenges and solutions.
  • Prepare, coordinate, edit, finalize, and file sector materials, including briefing notes, presentations, reports, correspondence, articles, minutes, invitations, and workplans.
  • Attend Chiefs-in-Assembly meetings twice annually and take notes.
  • Assist with planning and coordinating Chiefs Committees, Technical Committees, and Working Groups.
  • Monitor or attend parliamentary standing committees as required.
  • Assist the Director with funding-agreement reporting requirements.
  • Submit leave requests through the leave system and perform other duties assigned by the Director.

Working Conditions

  • The position is primarily office-based, with frequent travel for meetings, community engagements, and events.
  • Irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, may be required to meet organizational needs.
  • The role requires handling high-pressure situations and adapting to changing circumstances.
  • The work involves prolonged sitting and computer use.
  • The role requires professionalism, discretion, cultural sensitivity, emotional resilience, and the ability to navigate politically sensitive environments.

Who Can Apply

  • A post-secondary degree in political science, social science, computer science, information technology, or a related field and 5 to 7 years of directly relevant senior experience, or an equivalent combination.
  • At least 5 years of experience with First Nations and First Nations programs and policies.
  • Advanced AI knowledge and demonstrated understanding of AI's impact on First Nations communities.
  • Advanced experience analyzing complex policy issues and data and communicating findings to varied audiences, including senior leadership.
  • Familiarity with management information systems, databases, and Excel for data analysis.
  • Experience working with First Nations partners and multiple levels of government and officials.
  • English is the working language; French and a First Nations language are assets.
