Senior Lab Technician

Laboratory Testing

• Perform routine and specialized laboratory investigations within the hospital laboratory's scope.
• Collect, identify, label, process and store clinical samples.
• Perform hematology, biochemistry, clinical pathology, serology and other tests.
• Verify abnormal or unusual results before reporting according to laboratory protocol.
• Operate, maintain and troubleshoot laboratory analyzers and equipment.

Quality and Supervision

• Perform internal quality control and maintain quality-control records.
• Ensure calibration and preventive maintenance of laboratory equipment.
• Supervise junior technicians and support staff and ensure adequate shift coverage.
• Train junior staff on sample handling, testing, equipment operation and safety practices.
• Monitor staff performance and report operational issues to the Laboratory In-charge.

Patient and Sample Management

• Ensure correct patient identification before sample collection.
• Handle blood, urine, stool, swab and other clinical specimens safely.
• Follow procedures for rejected, insufficient, hemolyzed or improperly labeled samples.
• Maintain appropriate storage conditions for samples, reagents and controls.

Reports and Documentation

• Enter test results accurately and promptly into the Hospital Management System or Laboratory Information System.
• Verify reports before authorization or release according to hospital policy.
• Maintain laboratory registers, worksheets, quality-control records, maintenance logs and stock records.
• Maintain confidentiality of patient information and laboratory reports.

Inventory and Equipment

• Monitor reagent, consumable and laboratory supply stock levels.
• Maintain proper storage and expiry-date monitoring.
• Prepare timely indent requests to avoid stock-outs.
• Escalate major equipment breakdowns to the Laboratory In-charge, vendor or service engineer.

Emergency and Coordination

• Support emergency, ICU, OT, inpatient and outpatient investigations as required.
• Coordinate with doctors, nurses, reception, pharmacy and other hospital departments.
• Prioritize critical and emergency samples appropriately.
• Communicate critical laboratory values to the concerned doctor or nurse and maintain documentation.

Required Skills

• Strong knowledge of laboratory procedures and diagnostic testing.
• Good analytical, problem-solving, communication and interpersonal skills.
• Good understanding of quality-control procedures.
• Ability to operate laboratory analyzers and use computer and data-entry systems.
• Ability to work independently, supervise junior staff and work under pressure.
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy.

Safety and Working Conditions

• Follow standard precautions, infection-control policies, personal protective equipment requirements and biomedical-waste procedures.
• Report needle-stick injuries, exposure incidents, spills and other laboratory accidents immediately.
• Work rotational shifts, including night shifts, weekends and holidays as required.
• Handle biological specimens and laboratory chemicals with appropriate safety precautions.
