Job Purpose

The Senior Embedded Linux & Vision AI Engineer leads the technical development of Trakm8's embedded Linux device platforms and AI-powered camera products, taking them from working prototypes through to reliable, certified, production devices deployed in customer fleets. The role combines deep embedded Linux platform work (BSP, kernel, drivers, build systems, OTA updates) with the deployment and optimisation of computer vision models on resource-constrained edge hardware.

As the senior engineer in this domain, the postholder sets the technical direction for embedded Linux and vision AI within the Devices team, raises the capability of colleagues through mentoring and documented practices, and ensures this critical area is never dependent on a single person.

For candidates with proven engineering leadership experience, this role may be combined with the Devices Team Lead position; please indicate in your application if you wish to be considered for the combined role.

Embedded Linux Platform

Own the embedded Linux platform for camera and device products: BSP maintenance, kernel and driver work, and build systems (Yocto or Buildroot)

Design and maintain robust OTA update, provisioning and device management mechanisms

Optimise boot time, power management and system reliability for vehicle-mounted, battery-conscious devices

Vision AI & Camera Systems

Integrate, optimise and deploy computer vision models on edge hardware (TensorFlow Lite, ONNX Runtime), including quantisation and hardware acceleration (NPU/GPU/DSP)

Develop and tune the camera pipeline (V4L2, ISP configuration) for automotive imaging conditions

Define and track accuracy and performance metrics for vision features, and improve them release on release

Productisation & Delivery

Take camera and device products from prototype through field trials to production release

Support certification, type approval and manufacturing test for new devices

Work with hardware, cloud and platform teams to deliver complete end-to-end solutions

Quality & Security

Implement secure boot, signed updates and device hardening in line with UN R155/R156 requirements

Establish automated testing and CI for firmware images and model updates

Ensure releases meet reliability, safety and regulatory expectations for automotive devices

Technical Leadership & Mentoring

Set standards and documented practices for embedded Linux and vision AI development

Mentor and develop other engineers in the team, sharing knowledge deliberately to remove single points of failure

Contribute to technical strategy and roadmaps with the Devices Team Lead, Architecture function and CPTO

Champion AI-assisted development tools and modern engineering practice

Essential

5+ years of embedded Linux development experience: kernel, drivers, BSP work and build systems (Yocto or Buildroot)

Strong C and C++ skills, with Python for tooling, testing and ML workflows

Proven experience deploying and optimising ML/computer vision models on edge hardware, including quantisation and hardware acceleration (e.g. TensorFlow Lite, ONNX Runtime)

Experience with computer vision frameworks and models (OpenCV, YOLO-class detectors)

Experience with camera subsystems and pipelines (V4L2, ISP tuning, MIPI-CSI)

Track record of taking embedded products from prototype to production and field deployment

Ability to define and work to measurable accuracy, performance and power targets

Clear communicator, able to explain complex technical trade-offs to technical and non-technical audiences

Desirable

Automotive experience: CAN/vehicle protocols, ISO 26262, ASPICE, UN R155/R156

Engineering leadership or line management experience (relevant to the combined Team Lead option)

Cellular IoT (LTE-M, NB-IoT, 5G) and wireless connectivity experience

Hardware security and cryptographic implementations (secure boot, secure elements)

MLOps for edge devices: model versioning, telemetry-driven retraining, fleet rollout of models

Experience with driver monitoring, ADAS or other automotive vision applications

Personal Attributes

Technically credible senior engineer who leads by example and earns trust quickly

Pragmatic, able to balance research-quality ambition with shipping reliable products

Generous with knowledge; mentors and documents by default

Proactive problem-solver who anticipates risks and takes ownership of outcomes

Resilient and calm under pressure, comfortable with ambiguity and hard technical problems

Innovative and curious, continually seeking better ways of working and embracing new technologies

Quality-driven, with high personal standards and attention to detail
