About the Role
Chexy is hiring a Senior Backend Engineer to own a payments domain in its core backend service end to end.
The role covers inflows, outflows, ledgering, settlement, card-network integrations, and banking systems.
The engineer will set architecture and reliability standards, make independent decisions, and help other engineers improve.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Own a payout or pay-in rail across architecture, reliability, observability, and roadmap.
- Lead ledger design for double-entry correctness, reconciliation, settlement timing, and auditability.
- Build and harden integrations with payment networks and Canadian banking rails.
- Design idempotent and recoverable event-driven workflows using Google Cloud Pub/Sub and Temporal.
- Set technical standards through architecture reviews and reusable engineering patterns.
- Define SLOs, alerts, and runbooks and make reliability targets effective.
- Mentor engineers through reviews and pairing.
- Work directly with the CTO on product and technical priorities.
Who We’re Looking For
- Substantial production backend experience with TypeScript and Node in payments, ledgers, billing, or similar correctness-critical systems.
- Deep knowledge of relational database design, transactions, isolation levels, and concurrency failures.
- Experience operating event-driven systems and handling duplicate delivery, out-of-order events, and poison messages.
- Fluency in double-entry accounting, reconciliation, idempotency, and settlement.
- Daily experience with AI coding tools and strong judgment about their limitations.
- Previous ownership of a service, domain, or integration through incidents.
- Comfort making decisions with incomplete information and revisiting them as circumstances change.
- Clear written communication and ability to work without close managerial direction.
Bonus Points
- Direct experience with card networks or Canadian banking APIs.
- Rust experience or interest in Rust or TigerBeetle for ledger development.
- Experience with Google Cloud Platform, Terraform, or Temporal.
- Background in regulated or compliance-heavy environments.
