Role Overview
The Semantic AI Engineer joins the Reference Data Architecture team within AbbVie’s Enterprise Knowledge Accelerator organization.
The role builds enterprise semantic capabilities by combining generative AI technologies, reference data expertise, and semantic architecture.
The role operationalizes semantic assets through Enterprise Ontology Services for enterprise platforms and data initiatives.
Engineering Responsibilities
- Design and operationalize AI-driven semantic solutions using enterprise ontologies and semantic assets.
- Expose semantic capabilities through Enterprise Ontology Services for Enterprise Product Master Data, Dataverse, and related platforms.
- Translate ontologies, controlled vocabularies, mappings, semantic contracts, and standards into services, APIs, tools, agents, and reusable software components.
- Enable inference, search, normalization, query expansion, entity resolution, and data integration across enterprise workflows.
- Develop and maintain technical documentation, integration patterns, examples, and adoption guidance.
Collaboration and Governance
- Define implementation patterns, decision processes, and quality gates that embed FAIR data principles into generated software assets.
- Collaborate with platform, product, data, ontology, and governance teams to align services with business requirements and enterprise architecture.
- Follow standards for code of conduct, data security, GxP compliance where relevant, software development lifecycle practices, and responsible AI.
- Monitor emerging technologies relevant to knowledge analysis and insights discovery.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field with five years of experience, or master’s degree with four years of experience.
- Experience building production-quality data, software, AI, or semantic technology solutions, including APIs, agents, services, integrations, or reusable components.
- Working knowledge of ontologies, controlled vocabularies, knowledge graphs, OWL, RDF, SPARQL, metadata, mapping, normalization, and FAIR data principles.
- Ability to translate business and governance requirements into scalable technical designs.
- Ability to learn emerging technologies, meet timelines, produce documentation, and contribute to CI/CD practices.
- Strong collaboration, stakeholder management, and communication skills.
- Ability to work across interdisciplinary teams and communicate with scientists and non-scientists.
- Fluency in English.
Technical Skills
- Relevant technologies include REST APIs, XML, JSON, Python libraries such as Pydantic, MCP tools, agents, services, integrations, and CI/CD practices.
