The Security Guard 1 provides security, surveillance, and access control services in an inpatient or secure environment to ensure the safety of patients, staff, and visitors.

The role is responsible for monitoring movement, maintaining perimeter and interior security, conducting searches, responding to emergencies, and supporting a safe, respectful, and orderly environment in compliance with regulatory and legislative requirements.

Access Control & Surveillance

Monitor and control the movement of patients, staff, and visitors within secured areas

Provide continuous interior and perimeter surveillance through observation and documentation

Maintain key control and personal alarm systems

Conduct routine and situational security checks of unit perimeters and safety equipment

Search & Security Screening

Conduct person searches and unit searches for security screening or incident investigation

Support investigations through accurate observation, reporting, and documentation

Identify and report security risks, hazards, or breaches

Safety, Emergency & Incident Response

Respond to emergencies calmly and effectively in accordance with procedures

Assist in managing incidents while maintaining safety

Apply fire safety, emergency response, and hazardous materials awareness practices

Documentation & Communication

Complete accurate security documentation and reports

Communicate effectively with staff, patients, visitors, and team members

Demonstrate professionalism and sensitivity when interacting with individuals experiencing mental health challenges

Professional Practice & Team Collaboration

Work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team

Exercise sound judgment, problem-solving, and independent decision-making

Support a respectful, inclusive, and service-oriented workplace

Comply with all applicable legislative, regulatory, and organizational requirements

Shift & Work Requirements

Work rotating day, evening, and night shifts

Work 12-hour shifts on a 24-hour rotating schedule, including weekends

Qualifications And Requirements

Grade 12 education

Completion of a recognized two-year Community College Law Enforcement program

Valid Security Guard licence under the Private Security and Investigative Services Act, 2005

Clean Criminal Record

Minimum 6 months to 1 year of security experience

Ability to remain calm during emergencies

Strong interpersonal and communication skills

Sensitivity when working with individuals experiencing mental health challenges

Basic computer literacy

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

Strong judgment and problem-solving skills

Availability to work rotating 12-hour shifts including weekends

Nice to Haves

Previous security experience in a health care or inpatient setting

Knowledge of fire safety and emergency response procedures

WHMIS training

Bilingualism (French/English) or proficiency in a second language

Salary

Range: $24.76 – $30.52 per hour
