Role Overview
The New York City Department of Correction is recruiting Recreation Specialists to support enhanced recreation activities for people in custody.
The role operates under the supervision of a Recreation Supervisor in city jail facilities, including housing units and communal spaces.
Responsibilities
- Conduct enhanced recreation programming for men and women in the Department's care and custody.
- Facilitate sports, games, movement, fitness and conditioning, basketball, tournaments, and other engagement strategies.
- Determine the needs of targeted groups, present programming ideas, and encourage participation in organized activities.
- Support health, wellness, stress reduction, teamwork, and collaboration through recreation activities.
- Identify and connect with additional community partners.
- Inspect equipment, materials, and facilities periodically.
- Complete and enter daily program data.
- Participate in scheduled supervision and complete assigned training.
- Assist with special projects and related duties.
Qualifications
- A qualifying baccalaureate degree with specified recreation-related coursework may satisfy the education requirement.
- An associate degree plus one year of full-time paid recreation-program planning, coordination, and supervision experience may qualify.
- A high school diploma or equivalent plus three years of qualifying full-time paid experience may qualify.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted.
- The equivalency provision requires at least one year of qualifying experience or 24 relevant college credits.
