Role Purpose
The Radiology Technician is responsible for the safe, accurate, and efficient operation of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Computed Tomography (CT) scanners to support the diagnostic imaging needs of organization.
The role holder ensures that all imaging examinations are performed in strict accordance with established clinical protocols, radiation safety standards, and patient care guidelines, while maintaining the highest standards of image quality and professional conduct.
• MRI Scanning Operations
- Perform MRI examinations across all body systems in accordance with departmental protocols and referring physician requests.
- Screen all patients and accompanying individuals thoroughly for MRI contraindications prior to entry into the scan room.
- Position patients accurately to optimize image quality and ensure diagnostic efficacy.
- Select and apply appropriate imaging sequences, coil configurations, and scan parameters for each examination.
- Administer MRI contrast agents as directed by the supervising radiologist, adhering to safety and dosage guidelines.
- Monitor patient condition and comfort throughout the scanning process and respond appropriately to any adverse reactions.
• CT Scanning Operations
- Perform CT examinations across a wide range of clinical indications in compliance with established imaging protocols.
- Prepare and administer intravenous contrast media as required, following departmental safety policies and radiation dose optimization principles (ALARA).
- Optimize CT acquisition parameters — including kVp, mAs, pitch, and slice thickness — to achieve the highest diagnostic image quality at the lowest possible radiation dose.
- Conduct pre-examination assessment of patient medical history, allergies, and renal function where contrast administration is intended.
- Monitor patients during and after contrast administration, recognizing and escalating adverse reactions promptly.
- Ensure accurate and complete documentation of all CT procedures, technical parameters, and patient information in the electronic health record (EHR).
- Equipment Operation and Maintenance
- Conduct pre-operational checks and routine quality control assessments on MRI and CT equipment at the start of each working shift.
- Ensure both scanners are calibrated and functioning optimally, reporting any technical faults or abnormalities to the relevant biomedical or engineering team without delay.
- Maintain an organized and fully stocked scan room, ensuring all required consumables, coils, and accessories are available and in serviceable condition.
- Participate in scheduled preventive maintenance activities and vendor service visits as required.
- Radiation Safety and Compliance
- Comply with all applicable radiation protection regulations, institutional policies, and national safety standards.
- Apply dose optimization techniques consistently across all CT examinations, including the use of automated exposure controls and iterative reconstruction where available.
- Ensure the correct use and maintenance of personal dosimetry devices and radiation protection equipment.
- Maintain a safe MRI environment by enforcing the five-zone access control framework and ensuring the removal of all ferromagnetic materials prior to scan room entry.
- Participate in periodic radiation safety audits and contribute to the departmental radiation protection program.
- Patient Care and Experience
- Great and communicate with patients in a courteous, empathetic, and professional manner, ensuring they are well-informed and at ease throughout the imaging process.
- Provide clear, accessible explanations of each imaging procedure, addressing patient questions and alleviating concerns prior to and during the examination.
- Respect patient dignity, privacy, and cultural sensitivities at all times during examinations.
- Identify and promptly escalate any deterioration in patient condition or expressions of concern to the supervising clinical team.
- Ensure the scan room environment is clean, organized, and prepared for each patient in accordance with infection prevention and control standards.
- Professional Development and Quality Assurance
- Maintain current knowledge of MRI and CT technology advancements, emerging techniques, and evolving clinical guidelines.
- Actively participate in departmental training sessions, clinical audits, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Engage in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities and fulfil all requirements for professional registration renewal.
- Contribute constructively to peer review processes and departmental performance improvement programs.
- Support the onboarding and training of newly appointed radiology technicians as directed by the Radiology Consultant
Skills
- Minimum of 3 years of hands-on clinical experience operating both MRI and CT imaging systems in a hospital or outpatient diagnostic setting
- Active registration and classification with the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties (SCFHS) in the relevant radiologic technology specialty.
- Demonstrated proficiency in operating clinical MRI systems across a broad range of anatomical regions and imaging sequences.
- Demonstrated proficiency in operating multi-slice CT scanners, including familiarity with contrast injection protocols and dose optimization techniques.
- Sound knowledge of MRI safety principles, including zone control, contraindication screening, and ferromagnetic hazard management.
- Working knowledge of radiation protection regulations and the practical application of ALARA principles.
- Familiarity with PACS/RIS platforms and electronic health record (EHR) documentation systems.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to effectively interact with patients of diverse backgrounds and clinical conditions.
- Ability to work under pressure, manage competing priorities, and maintain accuracy in a high-volume clinical environment.
