Under the supervision of the QC Microbiology Supervisor, the R&D Microbiologist is responsible for conducting microbiological tests in support of R&D laboratory activities, in accordance with established specifications, methods, and procedures.This includes testing raw materials, bulk batches, packaged product line samples and environmental monitoring samples (water, surfaces and air). This person might also be involved in other activities pertaining to the general operation of the Microbiology Laboratory, including media preparation and control, problem-solving efforts, identification testing for microorganisms and antimicrobial effectiveness testing of products.
MAIN DUTIES
Performs microbiological testing of raw material, packaged finished product and bulk batch samples per standard methods, specifications and procedures pertaining to both drug and non-drug products
Manages testing requirements for raw materials and packaged products per the flow of incoming samples. Any immediate needs for testing are as directed by the Supervisor or designate
Responsibles for routine sampling and testing for the purified water purification system, and for testing of samples from points of use

Handles monthly environmental air quality testing per standard procedure, including documentation of results
Performs routine monitoring of manufacturing and packaging equipment for microbial contamination in accordance with standard procedure, including documentation of results
Conducts routine monitoring of microbiological quality for compressed air in processing and packaging areas
Participates in problem-solving efforts with respect to microbial contamination concerns or issues as requested by the Supervisor, including assisting the identification of microorganisms
Involved in the preparation of media for microbiological testing, sterility control and growth support for validation of media, and maintenance of cultures
Assists in the sterilization of equipment for internal use by the microbiology laboratory and as required by other departments
Helps support the internal R&D program, and customer R&D efforts as applicable, through participation in the evaluation of antimicrobial effectiveness in new or modified formulations, as requested by the Supervisor
Involved in validation of sanitization procedures for manufacturing and packaging and equipment per directives from the Supervisor
Assists the Microbiology Supervisor in the training of manufacturing and packaging personnel with respect to appropriate manufacturing practises toward the avoidance of microbial contamination of materials and products
Complies with environmental protection policies and practises in the handling and disposal of biohazardous materials
Participates in the general operational upkeep of the Microbiological Laboratory, including maintenance of adequate supplies, media preparation, maintenance/ verification/ calibration of equipment, routine disposal of biohazardous and other wastes, and general cleaning
Perform any other related tasks as assigned by the immediate supervisor as required by operational requirements.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in microbiology or a College Diploma (DEC) in Microbiology combined with significant experience;
Basic computer knowledge;
Bilingualism (French and English);
The bilingualism is required to communicate with certain team members and to understand the technical documentation provided by our customers, mainly in English
