Role overview

The Production Engineering Manager leads Core, one of Production Engineering's two teams.

Core owns Production Engineering services and solves broader engineering problems spanning multiple Canva teams and groups.

The role combines technical direction, delivery ownership and direct people leadership.

What you will do

  • Lead software engineers through complex or ambiguous technical work and help them grow their autonomy.
  • Turn loosely defined problems into focused engineering goals and support delivery.
  • Set the team's focus, priorities and next phase as existing projects are completed.
  • Shape initiative structure, measurement and the conversion of lessons into reusable capability.
  • Set priorities, coach engineers and maintain the day-to-day health of the team.
  • Create psychological safety and help engineers develop organisational fluency and influence.
  • Build reliable services, reusable standards and feedback loops between Core and Embedded.
  • Grow engineering depth so the team can handle increasingly complex technical and cross-team problems.

Experience

  • Lead software engineers through complex or ambiguous technical work and coach their development.
  • Work in software environments where reliability, scalability and production risk materially matter.
  • Own significant technical initiatives from problem definition through delivery across multiple teams.
  • Drive adoption of new tools, practices or ways of working.
  • Communicate technical trade-offs clearly and set direction without prescribing every decision.
  • Create an environment where engineers can challenge ideas, learn and do their best work.

Technical knowledge

  • Strong computer science fundamentals, including concurrency, multithreading and data structures.
  • Depth in Go, Python, Java, C++ or another relevant language for meaningful technical engagement.
  • Strong working knowledge of system internals, networking and cloud platforms such as AWS or GCP.
  • Reason through ambiguous problems involving multiple components, teams and constraints.
  • Understand system design, architecture, engineering patterns, observability, capacity and failure modes.
  • Experience working in large-scale or high-criticality production environments.

Nice to have

  • Prior management experience in Site Reliability Engineering, Production Engineering or a related function is advantageous.
  • Large-scale storage, CDN, networking or distributed infrastructure experience is advantageous.
  • Experience developing technical leaders or shaping an evolving technical function is advantageous.

Group and team

Production Engineering sits within Canva's Reliability Platform subgroup in the wider Infra supergroup.

The function solves operational challenges through software design and code rather than operating systems from the sidelines.

Embedded works on targeted engagements, while Core owns shared services and broader problems across groups.

Core is designed as a focused team with shared goals and an emphasis on engineering execution.

Benefits

  • Equity packages are offered.
  • Canva provides inclusive parental leave, a Vibe & Thrive allowance and flexible leave options.

Interview process

  • Technology interviews may include interactive challenges and problem solving with an AI tool.
  • Interviews are conducted virtually.
