Production Engineering Manager

Role Overview

What You’ll Do

• Challenge technical assumptions, understand trade-offs, and support strong engineering decisions while preserving team autonomy.
• Set the team's focus, priorities, future problem areas, initiative structure, and measurement approach.
• Turn project lessons into reusable capabilities with broader organisational impact.
• Set priorities, coach engineers, create psychological safety, and develop team influence.
• Build reliable services, reusable standards, Core–Embedded feedback loops, and growing engineering depth.

Experience

• Lead software engineers through complex or ambiguous technical work and coach them to grow their skills and autonomy.
• Work in software environments where reliability, scalability, and production risk materially matter.
• Own significant technical initiatives from problem definition through delivery across multiple teams.
• Help teams adopt new tools, practices, or ways of working.
• Communicate technical trade-offs, set direction, and create an environment where engineers can challenge ideas and learn.

Technical Knowledge

• Strong grounding in computer science fundamentals, including concurrency, multithreading, and data structures.
• Depth in one or more of Go, Python, Java, or C++ sufficient to engage with designs and implementation choices.
• Strong working knowledge of system internals, networking, and cloud platforms such as AWS or GCP.
• Strong understanding of system design, architecture, and engineering patterns.
• Familiarity with observability, capacity, failure modes, and the operational characteristics of production systems.
• Experience in large-scale or high-criticality environments where reliability failures have meaningful consequences.

Preferred Experience

• Prior experience leading Site Reliability Engineering, Production Engineering, or a closely related function is preferred.
• Experience with large-scale storage, CDN, networking, or distributed infrastructure is preferred.
• Experience developing technical leaders or shaping an evolving technical team's scope and ways of working is preferred.
