Product EngineeringCustomer ResearchProject Scoping
About the Role
Purelend Technologies is hiring a senior Product Engineer to sit at the boundary of engineering and product. You will talk to customers, define and scope features, break down work, and write production code.
Key Skills for This Role
Product EngineeringCustomer ResearchProject ScopingSystems ThinkingTypeScriptPython
Responsibilities
- Sit with customers (brokers, underwriters, lender executives) weekly to understand workflows
- Define and scope features by writing briefs that identify who it's for, what changes, and the smallest version worth building
- Break down fuzzy problems into a sequence of shippable chunks for engineers
- Think in systems: understand software and customer workflow as one system, including state, side effects, latency, and error modes
- Write production code regularly, including prototypes and actual features
- Own outcomes: define success metrics, watch post ship metrics, kill what isn't working, double down on what is
Requirements
- 5–10 years building production software with end to end ownership of a product surface
- Real engineering background with current skills in TypeScript, Python, Go, or similar
- Systems thinking: ability to map customer workflows and identify break points
- Project decomposition: turning fuzzy problems into shippable chunks
- Sharp customer instincts: ability to ask the right questions to determine what to build
- Strong writing skills for briefs, decisions, postmortems, and customer summaries
- Comfort with data and product analytics tools (e.g., PostHog, Amplitude)
- AI fluency: understanding of LLMs and using AI tooling in daily work

About Purelend
- Purelend is an early stage company operating at the frontier of FinTech and AI, reimagining banking technology starting with mortgage loans.
- We're fully automating manual checks and underwriting to get customers funded faster.
- Our platform is already used by mortgage brokers and lenders across Canada.
The Role, and the Thesis Behind It
- AI is collapsing the cost of writing code; the binding constraint is clear thinking upstream of the IDE.
- We're hiring a senior Product Engineer to sit on that boundary: an engineer who thinks in systems, writes production code, and has technical credibility.
- You spend more time talking to customers, defining what's worth building, scoping it tightly, and breaking it down into shippable chunks.
What You'll Actually Do
- Sit With Customers: Be in front of brokers, underwriters, and lender executives every week via calls, screen shares, ride alongs, and office visits.
- Define and Scope: Write one or two page briefs that get to the point: who it's for, what changes, the smallest version worth building, what's out of scope.
- Break Down the Work: Turn fuzzy problems into a sequence of shippable chunks an engineer can pick up tomorrow.
- Think in Systems: See software and the customer workflow as one system, understanding state, side effects, latency, error modes.
- Write Code Where It Matters: Ship production code regularly, including prototypes and actual features.
- Own Outcomes: Define success before building, watch metrics after shipping, kill what isn't working.
What You Bring
- 5–10 years building production software with end to end ownership of a product surface.
- Real engineering background with current skills in TypeScript, Python, Go, or similar.
- Systems thinking: ability to map customer workflows and identify break points.
- Project decomposition: turning fuzzy problems into shippable chunks.
- Sharp customer instincts: asking the right questions to determine what to build.
- Strong writing: briefs, decisions, postmortems, customer summaries.
- Comfort with data: SQL is a plus; product analytics (PostHog, Amplitude) is table stakes.
- AI fluency: understanding of LLMs and using AI tooling in daily work.
- Mortgage industry experience is a bonus, not required.
What We're Not Looking For
- Engineers who want to live in the IDE and ship tickets someone else wrote.
- Pure PMs without engineering chops.
- Engineers who've drifted away from the IDE for so long they couldn't ship a real feature today.
- Anyone who believes scoping is the easy part of software and the hard part is typing.
Compensation
- Total compensation, a blend of cash and equity, is market competitive.
Details
- Location: Calgary, AB — in office
- Reports to: Seb Hiscock (CTO)
