Role overview
Canva's Production Engineering team combines software engineering with reliability work across large-scale infrastructure.
The Principal Production Engineer will shape the practice, lead its hardest engagements, and set its technical standards.
The role is hands-on and focuses on writing software that changes production behavior rather than only operating systems or alerts.
Current focus
- Define how Production Engineering engages with product and infrastructure teams, including scope and handoff.
- Own complex work involving sharding, multi-region architecture, and JVM performance at scale.
- Set the technical bar for production engineering and calibrate future hiring.
- Pair staff and mid-level engineers across engagements and grow organizational capability.
- Connect production engineering to the product roadmap and influence production readiness before release.
- Define measurement practices for incident severity, incident duration, and successful feature launches.
- Build trusted relationships with embedded teams and guide them toward faster delivery with less toil.
Experience
- Experience owning reliability in large-scale distributed systems.
