Role overview
Production Engineering combines software engineering with difficult reliability problems in Canva's infrastructure.
The role embeds senior software engineers with product and infrastructure teams to improve reliability, efficiency, and resilience through software.
At Principal level, the engineer defines the practice, hiring calibration, engagement standards, and technical bar.
Current focus
- Define the Production Engineering engagement model, including scope, collaboration, and handoff practices.
- Lead technically complex engagements involving sharding, multi-region architecture, and JVM performance at scale.
- Set the technical standard for production engineering and calibrate future hiring.
- Plan pairing across staff and mid-level engineers to grow capability across the organization.
- Connect Production Engineering to the product roadmap and influence production readiness before launch.
- Define metrics for incident severity, incident duration, and successful feature launches.
- Scale the impact of engagements across the organization and improve how teams build for production.
- Develop trusted relationships with embedded teams and guide them toward faster, more confident shipping with less toil.
