Role overview

Production Engineering operates at the intersection of software engineering and difficult infrastructure reliability problems.

The team embeds senior software engineers with product and infrastructure groups to improve how production systems behave.

At Principal level, the role defines the practice, its standards, engagement model, and organizational impact.

Current focus

  • Define how Production Engineering engagements are scoped, paired, and handed off.
  • Lead complex work involving sharding, multi-region architecture, and JVM performance at scale.
  • Set the technical bar and calibrate future hiring and engagement standards.
  • Shape pairing strategy and grow production engineering capability across the organization.
  • Influence product teams to address production readiness before features ship.
  • Define measurements for incident trends and reliable feature launches.
  • Build trusted relationships with embedded teams and reduce toil while maintaining shipping velocity.

Experience

  • Experience owning reliability in large-scale distributed systems.
  • Experience shaping an embedded engineering model across team boundaries.
  • Hands-on software engineering experience at senior technical scope.
  • Cross-organizational influence based on trusted technical judgment.
  • Production-scale experience with Java, Go, Rust, C++, or a comparable systems language.
  • Practical experience with distributed systems concepts including sharding, replication, and consistency tradeoffs.

Technical knowledge

  • Ability to reason about Linux scheduling, memory, I/O, and networking internals.
  • Experience with observability tooling, tracing, dashboards, and alerting.
  • Production Kubernetes experience, including understanding of the scheduler.
  • Experience profiling JVM applications or systems-level processes.
  • Production AWS infrastructure experience and incident response or on-call experience.
  • Knowledge of consistent hashing, leader election, consensus, backpressure, and circuit breakers is relevant.

Additional experience

  • Enterprise SaaS, JVM internals, and multi-region or sharding experience are advantageous.

Production Engineering sits within Canva's Reliability Platform group.

The group works on systems supporting hundreds of millions of users and aims to prevent incidents as well as improve incident response.
