Principal Production Engineer

Role Overview

Current Focus

• Define how Production Engineering partners with product and infrastructure teams, including engagement scope and handoff.
• Lead technically complex work involving sharding, multi-region architecture, and JVM performance at scale.
• Set the technical bar and future hiring calibration standard for production engineering.
• Shape pairing strategies and grow production engineering capability across the organization.
• Connect production engineering to the product roadmap and influence production readiness before launch.
• Define metrics for incident severity, duration, and clean feature launches.

Experience

• Experience owning reliability in large-scale distributed systems.
• Experience leading or shaping engineering work across team boundaries.
• Hands-on software engineering experience maintained through seniority.
• Experience influencing technical decisions across organizations through trusted technical judgment.
• Production-scale experience with Java, Go, Rust, C++, or a comparable systems language.
• Practical experience with sharding, replication, failure modes, and consistency tradeoffs.

Technical Knowledge

• Ability to reason about Linux process scheduling, memory, I/O, and network behavior.
• Experience with distributed-systems concepts including consistent hashing, leader election, consensus, backpressure, and circuit breakers.
• Experience building tracing, dashboards, and alerting for observability.
• Production Kubernetes experience at the scheduler level.
• Experience profiling JVM applications or systems-level processes.
• Production AWS experience across large-scale failure modes.
• On-call and incident-response experience.

Nice to Have

• Enterprise SaaS production engineering experience.
• JVM internals experience, including garbage-collection tuning and thread profiling.
• Multi-region or sharding experience involving data-store migration or high-risk architecture.
