Role Overview

The Core Banking Platform supports savings and mortgage accounts, transactions, interest calculations, and product changes across Skipton.

The Principal Engineer will define engineering standards and platform foundations that enable reliable, secure, high-performance delivery.

The role will guide squads toward small, safe, frequent changes while maintaining accuracy, resilience, and regulatory compliance.

What You Will Do

  • Define and scale a Core Banking Golden Path with secure pipelines, controlled release strategies, and resilience-first patterns.
  • Shape API and event contracts, posting and settlement patterns, product and account boundaries, and platform dependency baselines.
  • Embed quality, security, policy-as-code, and compliance-as-code controls into CI.
  • Decouple legacy components, clarify domain boundaries, improve resilience, and reduce technical debt.
  • Run recovery drills, refine telemetry, and ensure incidents produce actionable, audit-ready improvements.
  • Coach engineers, publish reusable patterns, raise hiring standards, and lead Communities of Practice.
  • Use operational insight to simplify, stabilise, and improve member and colleague financial workflows.

What We Need

  • Proven ability to reduce lead time, increase deployment frequency, and maintain low change-failure rates on complex platforms.
  • Experience with automation, policy-as-code CI/CD, observability, and progressive delivery.
  • Hands-on experience with savings, mortgages, posting engines, interest calculations, or ledger-integrated workflows.
  • Ability to define clear contracts, boundaries, and secure-by-design patterns.
  • Ability to influence engineering practice and partner with Architecture, Security, Quality Engineering, Release, Risk, and Audit.
  • JADE experience is helpful but not required.

What You Will Bring

  • Strong technical influence across large, mission-critical platforms.
  • Experience setting engineering direction and platform standards.
  • Proven capability in CI/CD, observability, resilience engineering, and secure-by-design practices.
  • Track record of improving lead time, deployment frequency, change-failure rate, and mean time to recovery.
  • Ability to simplify complex systems and guide modernisation at scale.
  • Outcome-focused thinking grounded in operational data and colleague insight.
  • Collaborative leadership and commercial judgement.

Workplace and Schedule

  • The role is described as offering hybrid working.
  • The stated working schedule is 35 hours per week.

Benefits

  • Benefits include a discretionary bonus, annual leave, pension contributions, colleague mortgage options, car salary sacrifice, private medical insurance, volunteering days, colleague networks, wellbeing benefits, and training and development.
