About the opportunity

Full-time fixed-term position until 30 June 2030 at the University of Sydney Camden Campus.

Join a research team in the School of Life and Environmental Sciences focused on oat crown rust.

The externally funded ARC Linkage Project aims to reduce the impact of crown rust disease on Australian oat production.

Salary

  • Base salary is $117,936 to $125,896 plus 17% superannuation.

Key responsibilities

  • Identify and characterise genetic sources of crown rust resistance in oat germplasm.
  • Generate high-quality greenhouse and field phenotypic and genotypic datasets.
  • Analyse genetic and disease-screening data using quantitative-genetic, statistical and genomic approaches.
  • Deliver research outcomes and milestones under the ARC Linkage project plan.
  • Plan and undertake controlled-environment and field-based experiments.
  • Apply established disease-screening protocols and assess disease severity and resistance responses.
  • Work collaboratively with university researchers, breeding organisations, industry partners and project collaborators.

About you

  • Completed PhD in plant genetics, genomics, molecular biology, agricultural science or a relevant field.
  • Experience with recombinant DNA technologies such as primer design and cloning.
  • Knowledge and experience in bioinformatics, including BLAST searches, SNP calling and GWAS.
  • Experience with plant hybridisation, pre-breeding and disease-response scoring in greenhouse and field settings.
  • Postdoctoral experience with publication in ISI-ranked peer-reviewed international journals.
  • Experience handling plant pathogens, especially biotrophs, and knowledge of cereal pathology and/or genetics.
  • Experience developing research projects, protocols, experimental designs, ethics submissions and grant applications.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team while taking initiative and exercising sound judgement.
