Requirements
- Degree in Planning, Landscape Architecture or related discipline, or equivalent qualification
- One to three years of related experience in Planning, Architecture or Urban Design fields
- Membership or eligibility for membership to the Canadian Institute of Planners or Ontario Association of Landscape Architects
- Knowledge of the Ontario Planning Act, regulations and procedures, and urban and regional planning principles
- Strong design, communication, interpersonal and customer service skills
- Good analytical and organizational skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Adobe Suite Products, GIS and Project Management applications
- Valid Ontario Driver’s License – Class ‘G’ or better and access to personal vehicle
- Willingness to attend site meetings at various locations during and after regular business hours

Job Summary
- Reporting to the Project Manager, Parks Planning, you will be responsible for providing parks planning and development advice during the review and evaluation of development applications and proposals, including official plan amendment, re zoning, plan of subdivision / condominium, minor variance, s
- You will conduct site visits and inspections.
- Specifically this position will focus on the coordination of various City of Markham Park related studies and plans and support the Parks & Open Space Development team by undertaking research, data management, special studies, parkland acquisition analysis and other initiatives.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Work as part of a team and promote good Parks and Open Space Planning and Development.
- Evaluate applications submitted for Official Plan and Zoning By law amendment applications, site plans, draft plans of subdivision/ condominium, consent, building permits, with respect to parkland and/ or cash in lieu of parkland.
- Conduct site inspections, independently or as part of a group. Prepare Parks Planning comments for draft reports going to committee/ Council.
- Assist the senior manager, project manager, senior planners with Parks Planning and Development related studies and research.
- Respond to inquiries from internal and external customers via email and telephone.
- All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Degree in Planning, Landscape Architecture or related discipline, or equivalent qualification, combined with one to three years of related experience in the Planning, Architecture or Urban Design fields (Experience in planning & Landscape Architecture preferred)
- Membership or eligibility for membership to the Canadian Institute of Planners or Ontario Association of Landscape Architects
- Knowledge of the Ontario Planning Act, regulations and procedures, and urban and regional planning principles.
- Strong design, communication, interpersonal and customer service skills. Good presentation skills considered an asset.
- Must have good analytical and organizational skills. Ability to set priorities, solve problems and meet deadlines under pressure. Good negotiation skills and ability to present ideas clearly to internal and external customers.
- Proficiency in all Microsoft Office, Adobe Suite Products, GIS and Project Management applications, some knowledge in Planning and Development Application Software, such as AMANDA, ePlan and preferably AutoCAD and Sketch up.
- Submission and maintenance of a valid Ontario Driver’s License – Class ‘G’ or better and access to personal vehicle for business purposes. As a condition of employment, you will be required to provide a satisfactory drivers abstract.
- Must be willing and available to attend site meetings at various locations throughout Markham and Region during and after regular business hours.
- Familiar with policies and principles relating to urban design, architecture, landscape architecture, built form, materials, natural and built environment and sustainable development practices.
