About the role:Pathology Queensland (PQ) provides diagnostic pathology services to all Hospital and Health Services (HHS) across metro, regional and remote Queensland and plays a critical role in the government's response to public health threats, epidemics, and civil emergencies. PQ offers laboratory services in the disciplines of anatomical pathology, chemical pathology, haematology, immunology, microbiology and genomics. PQ also provides expert analysis, scientific testing and advice to maintain and improve our public and environmental health, and to support the coronial system in Queensland.Phlebotomy staff are responsible for the collection of high quality and cost-effective specimen collection to clients of Pathology Queensland. A phlebotomist is part of a specialised team which is highly motivated, dynamic, and committed to excellent client service and to the high-quality care of Queensland Health patients. This role requires fast-paced environment skills that enable you to navigate the high demands of the public health sector.Your key responsiiblities include:Collection of appropriate quality blood and non-blood specimens from clients of Pathology Queensland as per protocols and the prompt delivery of specimens to the laboratory.Ensure correct patient identification, labelling and collecting techniques are followed according to documented policies and procedures.Liaise with patients, medical and non-medical staff to ensure correct collection of specimens and efficient operation of the Specimen Collection department.Proven ability to manage time effectively.Maintain professional attitude and behaviour when dealing with staff and clients.Perform operational duties which include restocking pathology consumables, maintaining clean work areas and assisting where the Phlebotomy Coordinator directs.Participate in relevant on-going education and assist in staff training.Work with integrity, comply with expected ethical and behavioural standards, respect patient's confidentiality and know the importance of patient information.Understanding of laboratory quality systems and the requirements of NATA accreditation and ISO certification.Working with Mental Health patients including inpatients at Baillie Henderson Hospital, Infectious Disease ward and patients in nursing homes.Role fit:You will be a reliable and accurate professional with the ability to follow established procedures and guidelines for specimen collection, with minimal supervision following appropriate instruction. You will understand the importance of standard precautions when working with patients and biological specimens, and demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work effectively as part of a team. A commitment to quality management, continuous improvement, ethical practice, workplace health and safety, employment equity and a respectful, inclusive environment is essential. The Specimen Collection department operates seven days a week, and phlebotomy staff are required to work rostered shifts, including weekends and public holidays, across various campus locations between 6:30am and 5:00pm.
