Role Overview
Prepares, fills, and compounds sterile and non-sterile medications, including anti-neoplastic agents, according to accepted standards and pharmacy policies.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties
- Reviews and processes medication orders for demographics, therapy appropriateness, dose, frequency, route, dosage form, interactions, allergies, laboratory values, and possible drug interactions.
- Restocks, operates, and troubleshoots pharmacy robotic equipment as applicable to different pharmacy areas.
- Prepares, fills, compounds, and double-checks sterile and non-sterile medications as applicable to the practice area.
- Maintains control and security of medications, including controlled and narcotic substances, and maintains dispensing and regulatory records.
- Pre-packages tablets, capsules, and oral liquid medications using repackaging machines or robotic equipment and maintains labeling records.
- Monitors medication-related activities and the performance of new pharmacists, pharmacy assistants, residents, trainees, and students with guidance from a senior pharmacist as needed.
- Maintains drug and supply inventory, monitors expiration dates, and prepares expired medications for disposal through electronic requests.
- Maintains a clean working environment, including hoods and countertops.
- Distributes medications to nursing units when required.
- Conducts nursing unit and clinic inspections and reviews outdated pharmacy stocks and supplies as assigned.
- Participates in performance and quality improvement projects.
- Participates in self and others’ education, training, and development and follows hospital policies and procedures.
