Role Overview
Lead onsite operations for a metal recovery plant serving the steel industry.
The operation includes slag evacuation from furnace pits, slag transportation, and scrap processing.
The Operations Manager reports to the Site Manager and is one of the senior-most site team members.
Operations Leadership
- Lead team leads, shift in-charges, plant operators, and heavy earthmoving equipment operators.
- Plan daily production for slag and scrap handling and processing.
- Manage the full team across all three shifts.
- Manage human and material resources to meet production targets.
- Make decisions about equipment use, availability, and utilization.
Safety and Quality
- Implement and enforce health and safety procedures.
- Set training schedules and train operators and shift in-charges.
- Monitor product quality standards.
- Implement quality control and tracking programs to meet quality objectives.
- Analyze production and quality data to detect and correct problems.
Process and Reporting
- Prepare and adjust production schedules as needed.
- Determine required material resources.
- Monitor staff performance and organize improvement interventions.
- Prepare and maintain production reports.
- Implement production process improvements and standard operating procedures.
Coordination and Budget
- Coordinate with the maintenance department to optimize resource availability.
- Coordinate with customers on a daily basis.
- Manage production budgets.
- Implement cost-control programs.
Qualifications
- A bachelor's degree in mechanical, automobile, production technology, industrial, or chemical engineering with at least 15 years of experience is one qualification pathway.
- A three-year diploma in one of these fields with 20 years of steel manufacturing experience is an alternative qualification pathway.
- Experience in a steel melt shop or blast furnace is preferred within the bachelor's-degree pathway.
- Good computer skills in Excel, PowerPoint, and HTML are required.
