Medical Director, FMC General Systems ICU

The Department of Critical Care Medicine (DCCM) invites applications for the position of Medical Director in the FMC General Systems ICU (FMC A/B Pods).
The position is a 0.2 FTE position with the DCCM.
Applicants must have a medical degree; fellowship training in critical care medicine with certification by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCPC) or equivalent; and dedicated training or experience in general systems critical care.
Applicants must also be eligible for full licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.
The successful applicant will be able to provide excellent care as an intensivist at any of the four general systems intensive care units operated by the DCCM within Alberta Health Services – Calgary Corridor. The Medical Director will provide medical leadership for FMC A/B Pods and general systems ICU services at FMC, working collaboratively with the ICU Patient Care Manager, site executive leadership, Facility Medical Director, Deputy Medical Director, and Department Head on clinical, operational, quality, and patient safety issues. The successful candidate will serve as the primary medical leadership contact for non-neurocritical care patient issues, including RLS reviews and patient/family concerns, and will participate in key site and departmental committees, including the Calgary Corridor ICU Executive Committee, the DCCM Medical Executive Committee, and the Departmental Quality Assurance Committee.
This role includes leadership in the development and implementation of general systems ICU policies, procedures, protocols, and clinical workflows; oversight of admissions, discharge planning, and interdisciplinary communication; support of the annual clinical schedule and site-specific coverage solutions; and coordination with regional referral services, including RAAPID and STARS. The Medical Director will also organize regular site-specific physician clinical meetings for FMC A/B Pods, assist the Department Head with physician evaluation, workforce planning, recruitment, and departmental reporting, and promote a positive site culture grounded in professionalism, collaboration, respect, accountability, and continuous improvement.
The Medical Director will also contribute to resident and learner education within FMC A/B Pods, supporting the Residency Program Director, Residency Training Committee, Department Head, and site education leads, and will promote effective bedside teaching, simulation, and interprofessional education within the general systems ICU environment. In addition, the position supports departmental quality improvement, quality assurance, and scholarly activities relevant to general systems critical care, including collaboration on clinical research and QI protocols, and fosters high-quality data collection and academic engagement among physicians, trainees, and the multidisciplinary team.
Candidates must demonstrate an established reputation for excellence in clinical care and scholarly productivity.
Additional interests and training in research, education, or quality improvement will be viewed as a major asset.
The position supports departmental educational, research, quality-assurance, and administrative initiatives, with an expectation that at least 20% of ICU-related time is dedicated to one or more of these areas.
The candidate is expected to have a Major Clinical appointment with the Cumming School of Medicine within the University of Calgary and be a member of the University of Calgary Medical Group.
