Mechanical Design & DFM Engineer

The role

This is not a drafting job, and it is not a CAD operator job.

You will own how our work is designed to be manufactured and assembled.

You will take a customer's drawing and redesign it so the parts cut faster, locate themselves without jigs, arrive with the weld preparation already cut, and weld in a fraction of the time — then put the saving in writing so our sales team can sell it.

You will also support estimating, because at Morshedi cost is built from the design and the process, not guessed at.

• Redesign customer assemblies for manufacture and assembly, with a focus on self-locating tab-and-slot joints in tube, profile and sheet weldments
• Design weld preparations that use our bevel cutting capability, so the customer never grinds an edge by hand
• Design specifically for laser welding, which needs fit-up held under half a millimetre — our welders are cross-trained on laser and MIG and we want them using the laser
• Build and maintain a reusable library of standard joints and connection details, so repeat work does not get redesigned from scratch
• Produce written savings reports for each redesign: welding hours saved, fit-up hours saved, material saved
• Support technical estimating — review incoming enquiries, flag the design opportunity, and help price the job from the process
• Exploit what our machines can actually do: 650 mm diameter tube, 12 metre lengths, structural beam on a 20 kW laser, 45° bevel on 50 mm plate

• Degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing or Production Engineering
• Four or more years designing welded steel fabrications for production — not only drawing them
• Fluent in SolidWorks or Inventor, including sheet metal and weldment environments
• Real understanding of DFM and DFA. You can describe a specific redesign you made, why you made it, and what it saved
• Working knowledge of welding processes, weld symbols, joint preparation and distortion control
