Role Overview

The Software Engineering Manager leads the Customer Files Orchestration team within CoCounsel Legal.

The service handles customer file upload, storage, extraction, embedding, indexing, observability, and monitoring at large scale.

The team owns a distributed systems platform with durable state, fair queuing, idempotent processing, reliability, and operational responsibility.

Technical Leadership

  • Own the customer file orchestration service and balance new capability delivery with reliability.
  • Lead API-first execution with versioned contracts, clear ownership, documentation, change management, and independent deployability.
  • Guide decisions on consistency, delivery guarantees, crash recovery, asynchronous state transitions, and service boundaries.
  • Own fair queuing, rate limiting, backpressure, circuit breaking, dead-letter handling, and autoscaling.
  • Ensure the team designs, builds, tests, deploys, scales, and operates its services, including on-call, incident response, and SLOs.
  • Partner with platform and client application teams to deliver orchestration capabilities.

Team Management

  • Hire, onboard, develop, and manage the Files Orchestration engineering team.
  • Build a stable team with clear ownership, durable operating practices, and responsibility from code through production support.
  • Translate technical scale and orchestration trade-offs for product managers and business leaders.
  • Establish team rhythms for roadmaps, stand-ups, demos, retrospectives, and support rotations.
  • Negotiate capacity and roadmaps across teams to reach sound technical decisions.

Strategic Delivery

  • Define engineering processes covering design, code review, testing, instrumentation, support, and reliability.
  • Establish service health benchmarks for throughput, time-to-available, failure and retry rates, tenant fairness, and API SLOs.
  • Sequence foundational infrastructure work against product deadlines and make technical trade-offs visible to leadership.
  • Align the roadmap with CoCounsel priorities and adjacent engineering teams.

Required Qualifications

  • A bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 8 years of software engineering experience, including at least 3 years managing engineers.
  • Direct experience hiring, coaching, and managing engineering performance.
  • Production experience designing and operating large-scale enterprise orchestration systems across service boundaries.
  • Extensive AWS and production Python experience, including Python concurrency and asyncio.
  • Experience with containerized workloads on Kubernetes, including scaling behavior and resource limits.
  • Deep understanding of consistency models, delivery guarantees, idempotency, queues, fair queuing, rate limiting, and backpressure.
  • Experience owning production services end-to-end and advanced knowledge of distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, observability, and SDLC practices.
  • Excellent communication and alignment skills across engineering, product, architecture, and external teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with document extraction, OCR, format handling, large files, or third-party document management systems.
  • Familiarity with Team Topologies terminology and organizational patterns.
  • Experience with Kafka, MSK, SQS, event-driven autoscaling, Temporal, Step Functions, or similar technologies.
  • Experience with retrieval, embedding, or indexing pipelines supporting LLM or agentic applications.
  • Prior exposure to the legal industry.

Workplace

  • The role uses a flexible hybrid work model for office-based roles.

Compensation

  • The Ontario, Canada base compensation range is CAD 140,600 to CAD 190,600.
  • The role may also be eligible for an annual bonus based on enterprise and individual performance.
