Avalara is seeking an experienced Machine Learning Engineer with a software development background.
Lead work on a large language model framework that powers diverse Avalara applications.
The role covers conceptualization, prototyping, delivery, scalability, performance, and accuracy of LLM platform features.
This is an explicitly remote role.
Responsibilities
- Build on the foundational framework supporting large language model applications.
- Work with LLMs including GPT, Claude, Llama, and other Bedrock models.
- Apply CI/CD, functional testing, and unit testing best practices.
- Research and apply current machine learning and software development technologies.
- Write, review, and maintain high-quality code and documentation.
- Lead code reviews and mentor junior engineers.
Requirements
- Bachelor's or master's degree in computer science with 5+ years of software development experience.
- Experience building machine learning models and deploying them in production environments.
- Proficiency in cloud computing environments such as AWS, Azure, or GCP.
- Experience with machine learning frameworks, generative AI, design patterns, and data structures.
- Good analytical, design, and debugging skills.
- Python experience is preferred, with additional programming languages valued.

- Python, LLMs, MLflow, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, AWS, GitLab, Postgres, Prometheus, and Grafana.
- The role involves AI and machine learning technologies, particularly generative AI and large language models.
