Lead Substation Physical Engineer

Role overview

Core responsibilities

• Perform conceptual and detailed HV and MV substation physical and electrical design.
• Develop layouts, electrical arrangements, one-line and three-line drawings, plan-sections, grounding, and AC/DC system drawings.
• Perform advanced engineering studies and calculations.
• Conduct quality control reviews on substation physical design projects.
• Create and review bills of materials.
• Develop and review proposals and scopes of work.
• Deliver technical presentations to support staff development.
• Interact with clients, including through site visits.
• Lead and mentor junior engineers and supervise one to six direct reports.

Background requirements

• At least 4 years of relevant experience.
• Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline; additional relevant experience may substitute for the degree.
• Leadership experience executing substation projects.
• Ability to lead bids and proposals for utility clients.
• Ability to perform quality control checks on substation design projects.
• Ability to read and design physical, protection, and control drawings.
• Ability to create and check bills of materials.
• Experience developing substation physical application documents.
• Experience with grounding, lightning protection, and lighting studies.

Preferred qualifications

• A Master’s degree in a related field is preferred.
• QA/QC experience and working knowledge of protection and control design are preferred.
• Experience with BUS calculations, WinIGS or CDEGS, and SDS AutoCAD Electrical is preferred.
