Position Summary

athenahealth is seeking a Lead Software Engineer for Team Shipyard in Chennai within its Internal Developer Platforms organization.

The role provides technical leadership across systems supporting developer experience and the software delivery lifecycle.

The team operates automated deployment platforms at scale across thousands of servers and multiple data centers.

Team Scope

Internal Developer Platforms builds tools and capabilities that help engineering teams develop software efficiently and operate products across an open ecosystem.

Team Shipyard owns deployment systems, source control infrastructure including Perforce, and tools supporting release readiness and code traceability.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Lead technical design and development within an Agile team.
  • Create detailed technical design specifications for implementation.
  • Mentor engineers, provide technical guidance, and improve team effectiveness.
  • Share technical and business insights across engineering and product teams.
  • Own systems and capabilities within the team’s problem domain.
  • Coordinate engineering efforts and help ensure work is completed successfully.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the evolution of technology and engineering practices.
  • Support infrastructure operating across multiple data centers and thousands of servers.
  • Work with DevOps technologies including RESTful APIs, AWS, Jenkins, and related tools.
  • Work with Perforce, Git, and source control infrastructure.
  • Develop services and tools supporting the software development and deployment lifecycle.
  • Apply Unix/Linux, microservices, Docker, and distributed computing to technical challenges.

Expected Education and Experience

  • At least 7 years of software engineering experience and a solid foundation in computer science.
  • Bachelor’s degree, bootcamp training, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Experience in an enterprise-scale Agile development environment.
  • Proficiency in at least one modern programming language.
  • Working knowledge of Unix/Linux, RESTful APIs, AWS, microservices, Docker, and distributed computing.
  • Hands-on experience with Perforce, Bitbucket, ClearCase, or comparable source control systems.
  • Knowledge of Perl.

Technology Environment

  • Technologies used across the team include AWS, Jenkins, Harness, Perforce, Git, Java, Perl, Python, Ansible, and server management technologies.
  • Familiarity with DevOps technologies and practices is expected.
  • Prior DevOps experience is not required, while systems or infrastructure experience is strongly preferred.
