Lead Drainage Engineer

Role overview

Drainage and project delivery

• Lead planning, design, and delivery of drainage and stormwater management systems for infrastructure and development projects.
• Manage hydraulic and hydrological modelling, flood risk assessments, and drainage impact studies.
• Review and approve design calculations, drawings, and reports prepared by early- and mid-career professionals.
• Develop water-sensitive urban design solutions and apply innovative and value-engineering approaches.
• Manage project timelines, budgets, and resources.

Technical and stakeholder leadership

• Act as the primary drainage discipline contact and deputise for the drainage design manager when required.
• Provide technical leadership and ensure compliance with design standards, codes, and best practices.
• Liaise with clients, stakeholders, and regulatory authorities to secure approvals and resolve technical issues.
• Prepare technical bid responses and level-of-effort estimates for prospective drainage work.
• Mentor team members and coordinate with CAD, BIM, and 3D modelling teams.

Engineering activities

• Undertake hydrologic modelling, calculations, drawings, report writing, design review, and supervision.
• Stay current with drainage technologies, modelling tools, and industry regulations.

Education and experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Hydraulic, Hydrology, or Water Engineering is required.
• A Master’s degree in Water Engineering or Hydrology is advantageous.
• At least 20 years of water engineering experience, including stormwater drainage design, stormwater management, and planning, is required.
• Experience with InfoWorks ICM using 1D and 2D modelling is compulsory.

Technical skills

• Strong knowledge of hydrology, hydraulics, and hydrologic and hydraulic modelling is required.
• Experience with software such as SWMM, StormCAD, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, and InfoWorks ICM is specified.
• Excellent command of ArcMap, QGIS, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and MicroStation is required.

Professional and collaboration requirements

• Candidates should be able to work collaboratively across disciplines, manage multiple projects, and meet delivery timelines.
• Experience estimating medium-scale bid work and preparing technical submissions is required.
• Chartered Engineer status or equivalent, or substantial progress toward qualification, is required.
• MME Engineer Registration is preferred or must be attained within six months; Qatar or Middle East experience is a plus.
