Join Business Banking Risk as a Lead Credit Officer and play a key role in supporting growth within JPMorgan Chase's Government and Not-for-Profit portfolio.
This position combines independent credit authority, transaction structuring, and risk management, offering the opportunity to evaluate complex lending opportunities, partner with business leaders, and help drive sound credit decisions that support clients while protecting the firm.
As a Lead Credit Officer Vice President within Business Banking Risk, you will be responsible for the oversight, management and credit decisioning of new and existing extensions of credit for the Business Banking line of business.
Responsibilities
include analysis of credit opportunities, structuring transactions, negotiating and reviewing terms, identifying risks, conducting due diligence, and applying credit authority.
Job Responsibilities
- Exercise independent credit authority to evaluate, structure, and approve Business Banking credit transactions while ensuring alignment with firm risk appetite, underwriting standards, and policy requirements.
- Serve as a trusted risk advisor to Relationship Managers and business partners, balancing growth objectives with prudent risk management through thoughtful transaction structuring, including terms, covenants, collateral, and other risk mitigants.
- Underwrite and manage credit exposures within the Government and Not-for-Profit sectors, performing comprehensive due diligence through financial analysis, cash flow assessment, evaluation of industry and sector dynamics, and qualitative assessment of management and organizational strength.
- Synthesize financial, operational, industry, and borrower-specific information to identify material risks, assess repayment capacity, and formulate well-supported credit recommendations and approval decisions.
- Identify, escalate, and drive resolution of material credit concerns, portfolio trends, or emerging risk issues that may impact asset quality or portfolio performance.
- Ensure appropriate risk grading, documentation, and decision rationale while maintaining audit-ready records and adherence to regulatory and internal requirements.
- Contribute to a strong risk culture by sharing expertise, coaching colleagues, and promoting consistent underwriting and credit risk management practices.
Required Qualifications, Capabilities, and Skills
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience.
- Minimum 5 years experience in Credit Risk, Loan Credit, or similar subject.
- Demonstrated experience evaluating, structuring, and approving commercial credit transactions, with the ability to exercise independent judgment and articulate clear, evidence-based credit decisions.
- Strong understanding of credit risk management principles, including financial analysis, risk identification, transaction structuring, risk grading, and portfolio management concepts.
- Proven ability to assess complex borrower situations, balance business objectives with risk considerations, and recommend practical risk mitigation strategies.
- Executive-level written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to influence stakeholders, negotiate transaction structures, and present clear recommendations to business and risk leaders.
- Strong organizational and prioritization skills, with the ability to manage a diverse portfolio of work in a fast-paced, highly regulated environment.
Preferred Qualifications, Capabilities, and Skills
- Experience supporting Government, Municipal, and/or Not-for-Profit clients, including familiarity with sector-specific credit considerations and underwriting approaches.
- Demonstrated success managing complex credit relationships and transaction structures involving customized covenant, collateral, or repayment arrangements.
- Experience serving as a trusted advisor, coach, or mentor to credit professionals and business partners.
- Advanced degree in business, finance, accounting, or a related discipline.
