Role Overview
Cleary Gottlieb's internal AI team builds bespoke AI solutions for legal work using software engineering, data science, and legal domain expertise.
The Junior Generative AI Engineer joins the AI Acceleration Team and reports to the Data Science Manager.
The team is remote-first and provides mentoring, structured onboarding, pair programming, code reviews, and AI safety training.
Responsibilities
- Help build, test, and improve LLM-powered legal document analysis features for extraction, classification, and risk flagging.
- Clean, structure, and label legal data and build pipelines that support AI systems.
- Implement bounded components of multi-step AI workflows, including tool integrations, prompt chains, and retrieval logic.
- Write test cases, contribute to automated evaluation pipelines, and maintain regression suites.
- Support model selection, token budgets, caching, output filters, and personally identifiable information redaction.
- Collaborate with lawyers, engineers, data scientists, and product teams to define acceptance criteria and incorporate feedback.
Required Qualifications
- Some software development experience from internships, co-ops, or substantial academic or personal projects.
