Role overview

What you'll do

• Build and test systems that safely apply database schema changes during upgrades.
• Develop testing frameworks that validate schema changes before production.
• Implement safeguards that catch problems before upgrades run.
• Review migrations for safety, consistency, and backward compatibility.
• Collaborate with operations, packaging, distribution, and QA teams.
• Document upgrade procedures, schema change patterns, and migration best practices.
• Improve upgrade safety and speed by working with operations teams and responding to their needs.

What you'll bring

• Professional PostgreSQL software engineering experience in large, complex production environments, including schema migrations and performance tuning.
• Ruby on Rails proficiency with experience designing, implementing, and reviewing backend features and services.
• Ability to reason about software design, algorithms, and system-level trade-offs.
• Strong written communication and comfort with asynchronous remote collaboration.
• Self-directed organization and ability to manage priorities independently.
• Alignment with GitLab values, including transparency, teamwork, inclusion, and open source practices.
• Operations or infrastructure team experience, or willingness to learn cross-functional collaboration.
