Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced, motivated professional to join Lockton as an Insourced Risk Manager supporting a major private equity real estate client in the Metropolitan DC ( Chevy Chase, MD) office. This position is part of Lockton’s Private Equity Real Estate (PERE) team; however, the successful candidate will be dedicated exclusively to the client account and will work primarily from the client’s offices in the Washington, D.C./Maryland area.
Core Responsibilities
- The Risk Manager will provide direction and oversight of risk management at a corporate and national level for development and operational assets. The successful candidate will work alongside the client’s risk management committee and partner with internal and external legal, development, and acquisitions teams to oversee and manage risk-related matters across a diverse portfolio of development, redevelopment, and stabilized real estate investments. This individual will enforce and drive strategy as it pertains to compliance, loss events and will improve internal processes to mitigate future loss and risk. Duties and responsibilities will include:
- Serve as the primary risk and insurance liaison among client leadership, asset management, business partners, and Lockton teams.
- Build and maintain relationships with executives, legal teams, joint venture partners, lenders, and external advisors.
- Communicate risk, insurance, and claims matters effectively to senior stakeholders.
- Lead strategic oversight and coordination of insurance claims.
- Manage builder's risk, OCIP, and construction liability programs for development projects.
- Develop and implement risk management policies, procedures, and governance practices.
- Oversee master and asset-level insurance programs and support renewal strategy.
- Review and analyze insurance requirements, partner programs, contracts, and indemnification provisions.
- Maintain compliance with third-party insurance obligations and related documentation.
- Oversee enrollments, contracts, safety initiatives, and regulatory compliance matters.
- Evaluate project risks and recommend risk mitigation strategies for development, construction, and asset management activities.
- Partner with operational teams to align exposures with appropriate insurance coverage.
- Support enterprise risk management initiatives, including business continuity, emergency response, ESG, and sustainability programs.
- Bachelor’s degree in business-related field, or equivalent education and experience
- Minimum 5 years of risk management experience
- Strong understanding of real estate development, operations and related insurance and risk management practices.
- Experience with contract review and negotiation specific to the insurance and indemnity sections of loan documents and other legal agreement.
- The ability to provide guidance on insurance requirements to the executive teams, counsel, asset managers, clients, and business partners.
- General knowledge of legal and compliance; experience in working directly with legal counsel
- Working knowledge of all lines of insurance – including policies, coverages and fundamentals
- Real estate industry experience preferred
- Excellent analytical, organizational, interpersonal, critical thinking skills
- Administrative and organizational skills critical; excellent time management skills, flexibility, and management of a variety of tasks simultaneously
- Reliable and thorough with a deep commitment to accuracy
- Excellent client service skills with the ability to develop sound relationships with internal and external stakeholders at all levels of the organizations
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States and not require sponsorship for this position, now or in the future
