To be considered for this opportunity, the following competencies are required : Highway and Roadway Maintenance: Demonstrated experience performing routine and emergency maintenance on highways, roadways, and related infrastructure, including pavement repair, drainage systems, erosion control, vegetation management, sign and guardrail installation, debris removal, and repairs to highway structures, roadside features, and landscapes. Heavy Equipment Operations: Demonstrated skill in operating and maintaining heavy equipment, including front-end loaders, tractor mowers, sweepers, flushers, truck-mounted attenuators, backhoes, Vactors, and 32,000–60,000 GVW dump trucks equipped with snowplows and chemical deicer attachments. Licensing and Certifications: Possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with N endorsement and no airbrake restriction, valid CDL Medical Card, and valid driver’s license. Ability to obtain required safety certifications, including flagging and first aid certifications. Safety Awareness and Compliance: Demonstrated commitment to workplace safety practices, including confined space entry, fall protection, hazardous material handling, participation in Pre-Activity Safety Plans (PASP), and required safety training. Technical and Administrative Proficiency: Demonstrated ability to use electronic systems for timekeeping, maintenance tracking, inventory management, cost estimating, email communication, and standard computer applications. Teamwork and Leadership: Ability to work effectively independently and as part of a team, including leading a crew in the absence of a Highway Maintenance Worker 3 by applying sound judgment, decision-making, and leadership skills. Growth Mindset: Actively demonstrates a commitment to learning and growth. Service-Oriented: Demonstrates a willingness to take action to meet the needs of others. In addition to the competencies above, the following are also required : Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and perform emergency callouts/stand-by 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Ability to transport, move, and manipulate various types of equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Ability to respond to assigned duty station within 45 minutes of an after-hours call. Ability to traverse rough, steep, and uneven terrain and work elevated heights, above 25 feet over land or water. The Opportunity WSDOT is currently seeking to fill multiple non-permanent Highway Maintenance Worker positions for winter maintenance season in Connell, Pasco and Prosser.

We are looking for self-motivated individuals who are mechanically inclined and enjoy working outdoors.

The successful candidates will perform a variety of skilled tasks including operating snow removal equipment, repairing roadways, maintaining culverts and catch basins, removing debris, and providing traffic control for these operations.

What to Expect WSDOT maintenance personnel are expected to respond quickly to clear highways of hazards to ensure the public has safe and seamless access to travel.

This position may also work at elevated heights above 25 feet over land or water, traversing in rough, steep, and uneven terrain.

A typical schedule is Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week, for 4, 10-hour days.

Weekends, nights, and holidays may be required to respond to non-scheduled or call-out emergencies.

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Highway Maintenance Worker will:

• Perform highway maintenance activities in outdoor environments under varying weather, terrain, and traffic conditions, including work at heights, in confined spaces, and around hazardous materials while following established safety practices.
• Operate and maintain a wide variety of highway maintenance equipment, including Class A, B, and C equipment, snow and ice response vehicles, excavators, loaders, graders, cranes, paving equipment, sweepers, Vactors, and attenuator trucks.
• Safely use and maintain hand tools, power tools, chemical application equipment, and personal protective equipment (PPE) to support maintenance and repair operations.
• Support year-round and emergency maintenance operations, including snow and ice response, by working varying schedules, weekends, nights, holidays, and other operationally required shifts.
• Travel throughout the assigned maintenance area, and occasionally beyond, to perform maintenance activities, attend meetings, training, and support emergency operations in challenging weather and road conditions.
• Utilize computerized equipment controls, mobile devices, and computer systems to support maintenance operations and complete required documentation.
• Coordinate and communicate effectively with supervisors, maintenance staff, contractors, law enforcement, public agencies, and the traveling public to safely and efficiently complete work activities.
• Safely perform physically demanding work, including lifting, carrying, climbing, bending, stooping, standing, and walking on uneven terrain while handling materials and equipment.

As provided in WAC 357-58-175 , an employer may authorize a lump-sum accrual of vacation leave or accelerate the vacation leave accrual rate to support the recruitment and/or retention of a candidate or employee for a Washington Management Service position.

Vacation leave accrual rates may only be accelerated using the rates established WAC 357-31-165.

Note: Most agencies follow the civil service rules covering leave and holidays for exempt employees even though there is no requirement for them to do so.

However, agencies are required to adhere to the applicable RCWs pertaining holidays and leave.

Military Leave Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year.

Bereavement Leave Most employees whose family member or household member dies, or for loss of pregnancy, are entitled to five (5) days of paid bereavement leave.

In addition, the employer may approve other available leave types for the purpose of bereavement leave.
